America's Secret - Insane Asylums of the 18th century
We often have someone who was in our family tree, suddenly disappear without a trace of a death certificate. From 1820 to about 1910, many people were sent to these "hospitals" without the benefit of a diagnosis from a medical doctor. If they were "greedy", "cantankerous", "cranky", "spoke out of turn", "talked back to their parents", any strange reason for not being able to take care of a family member...could land them in an Insane Asylum. Sometimes, as in Independence, MO., the asylum was also the jail until the jail was built. There was no exit card...no way to get out unless someone came and got you, or you passed away in the facility. There are cemeteries on some of the grounds all over the United States.
With our Zoom meeting, you will receive links to the various record keepers for these closed facilities. Why were they closed down? People lacking education made judgment calls when they couldn't control their families. Making these calls subjected their family members to terrors much worse than "standing in the corner" or being "benched". You may have heard of the reporter Nellie Bly, who dedicated 10 days of her life to pretend to be insane and stayed in one of these torture houses. Her report turned these practices on their ear. We didn't know very much about mental health back then. Real doctors actually used these places to perform frontal lobotomies, convinced that they could change the behaviors of the inmates. They tried shock therapy and other means of restraint. It's a very sad state of affairs and though we have grown so much in the departments of Psychology and Psychiatry, you may have relatives who are wanting to be found.
