America's Secret - Insane Asylums of the 18th Century - our next Zoom call for June 2021

America's Secret - Insane Asylums of the 18th century

We often have someone who was in our family tree, suddenly disappear without a trace of a death certificate.  From 1820 to about 1910, many people were sent to these "hospitals" without the benefit of a diagnosis from a medical doctor.  If they were "greedy", "cantankerous", "cranky", "spoke out of turn", "talked back to their parents", any strange reason for not being able to take care of a family member...could land them in an Insane Asylum.  Sometimes, as in Independence, MO., the asylum was also the jail until the jail was built.  There was no exit card...no way to get out unless someone came and got you, or you passed away in the facility.  There are cemeteries on some of the grounds all over the United States.

With our  Zoom meeting, you will receive links to the various record keepers for these closed facilities.  Why were they closed down?  People lacking education made judgment calls when they couldn't control their families.  Making these calls subjected their family members to terrors much worse than "standing in the corner" or being "benched".    You may have heard of the reporter Nellie Bly, who dedicated 10 days of her life to pretend to be insane and stayed in one of these torture houses.  Her report turned these practices on their ear.     We didn't know very much about mental health back then.  Real doctors actually used these places to perform frontal lobotomies, convinced that they could change the behaviors of the inmates.  They tried shock therapy and other means of restraint.  It's a very sad state of affairs and though we have grown so much in the departments of Psychology and Psychiatry, you may have relatives who are wanting to be found.

Please join us on Saturday, June 12, at 5:00 pm
for this informational Zoom meeting.

Who is your HC over Family HIstory?   Please let us know!   Thank you!  Could you let your Consultants and anyone in the FH program know that our:

                                                 Zoom for June will be

                                             Saturday,  June 12th at 5:00PM.

The topic is:
Asylums and Family History and the evolution of the Census taker...

Anyone who is missing someone in their family for which there is no death certificate could possibly have been institutionalized during the years 1820 to 1910.  So,  if they were on one Census and disappeared on the next...and perhaps you see their children living with relatives...we will show how to find the databases of patients during that time period.

Dear Friends - you are more than welcome to leave comments but unless you leave your email, I won't be able to connect back with you.  You can always email us at naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com

Our MAY Newsletter is up and running !

Exaltation is a Family Affair...Only through the
click for our newsletter
saving ordinances of the Gospel of Jesus Christ can the family be exalted." ~ President Russell M. Nelson

President Russell M. Nelson and his wife, Sister Wendy Watson Nelson, extended a special challenge to Church members during the 2017 Family Discovery Day.
Quick disclaimer ;)  The ideas expressed in our Newsletter mention Sharing Time.  I understand that there no longer is Sharing time and as a former Chorister for 10 years in California that makes me sad because those were some great years of my life.  However, that being said, please take these ideas and apply them however they fit into your Primary.  All of the handouts are in the Word Format and can be changed to read however you would like.  Use your imagination and just help the kids with whatever time you have to learn Family History.  That is what President Nelson wants.  That is what we should figure out how to do.   We just try our best to come up with ideas that will be easy for you - if we failed this time, we will try again.  Our job is to come up with ideas for you - if our ideas cause you to think of something even better, that's beautiful!

Until next month,

Ted and Karen Meyer

“I invite you to prayerfully consider what kind of sacrifice—and preferably a sacrifice of time—you can make to do more family history and temple work this year,” said President Nelson, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

It's almost been a year since the Prophet asked us...

Sign up for our Newsletter - http://eepurl.com/cZDKYn

Scottsdale Coordinating Council - You are amazing!
We have almost accomplished EVERYTHING that was asked of us!
There's just one more item...
It's almost been a year since the Prophet asked us to work with the 11-12 year olds...

What have we done? Our Stakes have been doing an excellent job!  You are all running as fast as you can!

We've had a year packed with changes in Family History and have trained the Elders Quorum Leaders, their Counselors over Temple and Family History, and then there is the new Temple and Family History Leader that we needed to train in the Stakes where the Wards opted to use that method.

STAKE LEADS, WARD LEADS, CONSULTANTS

Our Stake Leads have been working hard to have each ward send a TFHC to work one night per month from each Ward to the Stake Library.  The Stake Leads have also been working to train the Ward Leads and Temple and Family History Consultants on the one-on-one, spirit led, personalized family history experience.  TFHCs are going out with the Full Time Missionaries and working with people who are being taught.  They are helping them gather names for a fan chart and visiting the Stake Center to enter names in their own FREE account!   They are partnering with ministering sisters and brothers to make sure converts get to the Temple within 60 days!  They have been using our training decks and cheat sheets to allay the anxieties of the new consultants using the non-manual preferred method of the First Presidency.

YOUNG ADULTS inviting Non Members to join in!

Our Young Adults are planning inclusive fun Activities, like Family History Escape Rooms and utilizing Family History Games to spark interest in the young adults' families.  They are infusing fun into Family History!

OUR YOUTH ARE MINISTERING TO THE ELDERLY AND GETTING FAMILY HISTORY DONE!

Our Youth have been going out in pairs with invitations and cookies to invite our  Elite Singles and Older Sisters/Brothers to work together in partnership, thereby getting to appreciate the older generation for their gifts and hard work lessons that they impart to the youth while working  with them.  Working to include older sisters and brothers by calling them and offering to work with them one on one in their homes has been found to be helpful and invigorating to both.  The youth have also increased their numbers by learning how to log in with their own login and password and reserving and printing their own names from the accounts.  That makes your Stake numbers swell and tells the Prophet that you are getting it done!  Well Done!

RELIEF SOCIETY, ELDERS QUORUM AND MISSION LEADERS

Our Relief Society and Elders Quorum Presidencies are working more with the Mission President and  Ward Mission Leaders.  As new people being taught are welcomed into the fold, these great people are making sure that they are loved and friend-shipped.  The Consultant assigned by the Ward Lead to work with that person also works with someone the Relief Society Counselor or Elders Quorum Counselor assigns to minister to that person.  The three work in partnership  to make sure that the new convert goes to the Temple within 60 days with their own names!

PRIMARY LEADERS
It's your turn to shine!
if you are over the 11-12 year olds, you have been encouraging them to do as the Prophet asked!

They are getting help from a Temple and Family History consultant learning the Consultant Planner and Partner Access.  They have their very own accounts and are able to reserve names shown to them in the Planner and they can hand them to their Parents to do until they become 12 and can go with the Youth to do the Baptisms.

We are so proud of the strides you have made this year!

Keep up the good work

here is your Primary Train-the Trainer Video for not only
the Primary Leaders, but the YW and YM leaders who work with the Youth Consultants.

HOW DO YOU KEEP TRACK OF CONVERT TRAINING?

Grasp the Challenge!
Be in Control of your Data forever!

Whether you are a Stake or Ward Lead, you are tasked with helping Investigators work with consultants and Missionaries with progression towards baptism.

During that time, there are several things that must happen.

1.  Who has been assigned to help them?
2.   As an investigator, have they been given a login and password?
3.   Have they started their tree?
4.   What is the baptism date?
5.   What is the 30 day mark towards the 60 day goal?
6.   What is your 60 day target date?
7    Post Baptism - have they been signed up for Partner Access?
8.   Have they learned the Consultant Planner?
9.   Do they have a limited use recommend?
10. Do they know how to reserve a name?
11.  Have they printed names?
12.  What was the date of the first visit to the temple with their names?

What if you had an excel workbook that you entered the data and it kept track of the numbers?
UPDATED 5/29/ 258PM - BETTER VERSION - MADE SURE THERE ARE NO LOCKED CELLS, BUT USE PASSWORD TEMPLE IF YOU WANT TO TWEAK IT FOR YOUR WARD

DOWNLOAD HERE

FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO GET IT SET UP:

This is working!  We have been getting messages that the Bishops/TFHCs are editing the sheets.

We updated the formulas in my Tracking spreadsheet - My husband is a mathematician and made it a lot more professional.    Here is our better version - I'm going to send it to others.
We created an account at onedrive.com
Created a folder for each Stake
Created a folder for each ward in that folder
Then saved a template as each ward name
Lastly created an excel sheet for our Mission President who wants to be informed and updated often of all the shared links, by ward....by Stake.  All he has to do is open one excel file and click on any ward he wants.

As long as no one changes your links and tries to do a "save as" to their system, your Leads can keep it updated for the Presidents/ (Stake and Mission) to keep "in the know!"

Excel is Microsoft Office - and it works very well with onedrive.com....google drive stops and hesitates with MSO products.
