Get ready, set, go! Help transition those 11 yr olds!

NASWFAMILYHISTORY - LOGO

It's coming - are you ready?

We have received so many emails last month wanting to know more about this last quarter's play for the goal!....and we aren't talking about football, soccer or hockey!

EQ Counselor is over Family History...You probably have 11 yr olds in your Ward.  High Councilors over Family History, you have 11-year-olds in your stakes who need to be prepared for YW/YM.  They are about turn 12 during the year of 2023...this now means they go into YW and YM  on Sunday, January 1, 2023.  This now means you have 64 days to do this...Who's in charge?  The parents....!

How can that be?  Parents in charge?  Awesome.  Primary Counselors over Family History, you get a little reprieve!  According to the Handbook Dec of 2022, the responsibility switched from you to the Parents.   So how do you all fit into the picture?  You can choose a way, but this is how we might do it:

Bishops/ EQ Counselors/ High Councilors over FH
        1.  Have your clerks give you a list of  children 11 turning 12 in 2023.
        2.  Format:  Name, Stake, Ward, Parents, Phone
        3.  Organize it a way that will be easy for you to follow up.
        4.  Invite them to come to our zoom.
        5.  We will give them some tools which will make the kids feel prepared.  We hope to see you all as well.  This is an important step.
Let's say the parents can't attend the zoom - someone from your ward/stake needs to have the knowledge we are about to impart so let's hope it's you - you'll save the day!

Here's the invitation to our zoom:  It's always on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 5 pm MT Arizona

I0 ways to grow closer to the Lord through Family History

The following are excerpts from an article on Family Search called

10 Ways to help your Family be closer to God

  • Read God's word together.

  • Serve Others together.

  • Express love for each other often.

  • Go to Church together.

  • Start traditions together.

  • Pray together as a family.

  • Teach good values.

  • Learn about your Ancestors.

  • Hold Weekly Family night.

  • Spend mealtime together.

If you have any other questions, please email us at naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com

How can I possibly grow closer to God by doing boring,

monotonous research?

Boring? Monotonous? Ah! Methinks you need a change of attitude. Let me help you set the scene in your mind. I'm an expert at attitude adjustments! Close your eyes for a moment.

Imagine yourself in a beam of light stepping onto your family cloud in a celestial place. It seems far away and yet close and personal at the same time. You see gates made of gold, open and the light emanating from within shines on beings walking towards you. The light shines on their backs in a way that makes them glow as if they have wings. The rays keep you from seeing their faces but you are sure that they know you...

One reaches out and as she touches you, you feel instant love. It is so powerful that you start to tremble, not in fear, but in awe. She smiles and says, "Thank you! There was a mistake in the file and you stayed with it. You got what you needed to do my work. I've been waiting almost 300 years and you were the one that made it happen. I can never repay the debt."

Her words touch your heart so much that tears literally fall from your eyes and without a sound, you are transformed. The feeling of overwhelming love and satisfaction fills your body and you realize that maybe it wasn't so boring and monotonous as you once thought. As a matter of fact, you are a little surprised that you ever had those thoughts go through your mind. We can't know exactly what is going to happen when we cross the veil. We can only hope that our work is acceptable to a loving God and grateful ancestors who have the opportunity to move forward because of our labors.

Researching Family History is so much more than just looking at records. It's thinking with your "whole heart" and opening the valve to celestial communication from beyond the veil. As you search, those spirits will attend to your soul. They will buoy your spirit when you become discouraged and they will cheer when you reap the benefits of your work.

Remember that perseverance is a virtue. One meeting a few years ago in Salt Lake, a Family Search Manager said,

~"Anyone can print out thousands of cards and flood the system, but when you slow down a little, in a way that will help you really get to know your ancestor, the whole process will become more personal." ~

In your mind, you may visualize a relative as he signed the paper which would allow him to dedicate his life to his country during the war. Now you have his signature. As you read on the World War I document, the color of his eyes, his hair, his body type, and any frailties, which would obviously exclude him from the opportunity, you can't help but feel empathetic. There, on that one document, you can put the whole picture together. Not only do you see his physical attributes, but you see how he made a living (his occupation). You will see who his boss was and what he did for that company. You will also see if he was a son living with his parents, or if he was a husband and father at that special time in his life.

Finding these when you are doing research will give you courage to go on. Use tools that will help you go forward. So often, if you aren't using research tools to keep track of where you have been, you constantly circle around and click on the same file over and over again. Do you need some research files to help you? You can click below - something just might be the key to your moving forward with a new positive attitude of love for your ancestors.

This excel sheet will allow you to enter the family names and years of birth - it will then calculate each age of each family member for each census - making it easier to match the family to the census.

Growing closer to God...

when adversity strikes.

Our message to you this month

No one has to tell you that 2020 has been probably the most challenging year of our lives. It's no secret that the adversary lies in wait for our faith to wane before he sidles up to our side to suggest another way...a way away from our beliefs. If ever you needed to grow closer to your Heavenly Father it is now.

It is easy for me to pray for others, but I was raised in a different faith, and engrained in that psyche of mine is a voice that says it is selfish to pray for yourself. This is wrong. You need to pray to Heavenly Father for yourself as well as for others. He will work miracles in your life. You may not see the miracle as it is unfolding, but it will become self-evident.

In September of this year, I had hip replacement surgery that went septic, leaving me without the ability to walk. When I finally started praying for answers, and for the Doctors to come up with a solution to cure the pain that kept me from healing, I heard the words from this scripture: In Proverbs 3:5–6, we read this counsel:

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.“In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Focusing on this, I came to hear the spirit whisper that these moments would pass but that I would grow closer to my Heavenly Father if I trusted him.

This past Sunday, after starting yet another round of antibiotics, was my first time to return to the church building for services. It was an emotional experience and it felt like I was home. The counselor in the Bishopric gave me a blessing. In that blessing, he paused and then said, "...that through this experience, I would grow closer to my Father." So this affliction has improved vastly and I can see a positive path to returning to normal. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but I have faith that if I lean not unto my own understanding and lean on the Lord, He will direct my path in all things. So our message is to listen to the spirit, especially when you are doing family history. Those spirits are actively trying to get your attention. They want to help you with your research. When you pray first before doing your work, you will be buoyed by angels who do not want to be forgotten and they will help direct you to the path to uncovering more opportunities for temple ordinances.

.

President Bonnie Cordon in 2017 gave a great talk about this subject, Lean not unto thine own understanding...I hope you will read it, think about it and start your New Year right!

A Ward Plan - do you have one?

The Ward Family History Plan

Wards are working towards having a Family History Plan which will enhance home study and increase Temple attendance.  Each Ward should have a Temple and Family History Leader.  The Temple and Family History Leader must be a Melchizadek Priesthood holder and works under the keys of the Bishop and his Elder's Quorum President.  Using handbook2 - we created an easy set of visuals to help you see the picture and how each person fits into the Ward Family History Puzzle.

These Graphics show also, how each faction, working with people being taught can bring them to the point of baptism with their own family names before the baptism date.  This ensures that they will have plenty of work to keep them busy for the next year, they will have a new friend in the Consultant who is assigned to them, they will have a new friend in the ministering sister or brother who is assigned to them upon baptism and the three of them together with others, will work to keep returning to the temple often.

Working to effect this prior to 60 days after baptism has been found to be the optimal period to ensure that retention will ensue.

David Nielsen just wrote an excellent article on Family Search about just this thing:
https://www.familysearch.org/blog/en/category/latter-day-saints/temple-and-family-history/

  • Under the direction of the bishop, the ward council develops a ward temple and family history plan. The ward council then reviews and updates the plan regularly.
  • The ward temple and family history leader or a member of the elders quorum presidency may lead the plan’s development and implementation.
  • A member of the Relief Society presidency may assist.
In this article it mentions the direction given by Elder Renlund:

In his instruction, Elder Renlund gave examples of what a plan might address:
  • Involving the ward’s 10- and 11-year-old children in temple and family history service.
  • Encouraging children and youth to qualify for and use a limited-use recommend at the appropriate age.
  • Involving every new convert in temple and family history service.
  • Encouraging new converts to obtain and use a limited-use recommend.
  • Helping ward members enter the first four generations of their family into the FamilySearch Family Tree.
  • Helping specific individuals prepare for the temple (as assigned by the bishop).
  • Encouraging temple attendance without establishing quotas or reporting systems.
Temple and family history consultants are key in helping a ward implement a temple and family history plan. As needed, various ward leaders and members may also help develop the plan.

How does the Relief Society work with Consultants?

A Relief Society President has two counselors.  One helps with missionary work and the other helps with Temple and Family History Work.  An Assignment can be made by the Relief Society to have a sister gather names from women who are unable to go to the temple and distribute to those who are still able to go.  This Sister can also work with the Counselor over Temple and Family History Work to create fun family history events, i.e., workshops, temple trips, and perhaps even a suggestion of relief society evenings including Consultants who help people find names.  The other Counselor works with the Ward Mission Leader and Full-Time Missionaries when a female is being taught by the Elders.  She can work with Consultants to help her build a family tree, even encourage other sisters to join in.  Once the sister is baptized, the Relief Society will assign a ministering sister to continue to help her find names and build her tree.

How does the Primary Presidency work with Consultants?

A Primary President has two counselors.  Formerly, one was over scouting and the organization of getting the 8-year-olds baptized each year.  The other Counselor was generally in charge of Activity days and Music.  Since the new program, deleting Scouting, the Counselor over the baptism of the 8-year-olds can now work with any new members to the ward moving in 8-11 to ensure that they are baptized.   The other counselor can work with Consultants to help the 10-year-olds get a basic understanding of family history.  She could also help the 11-year-olds learn more about Family Tree and build their own tree in preparation for YW/YM where they will attend the temple for Baptism of the Dead.  They are old enough to learn how to reserve and print a name.

How would the Ward Council work effectively with the Temple and Family History Leader and his Consultants?

How many consultants are needed in a Ward?

Let's discuss some ideas and suggestions.   That depends on the Bishop and the size of the Ward.  Basically, it is helpful to have a consultant assigned to every new investigator - to establish a friendship as they work towards baptism.   If every member was taught by a consultant how to use the planner and Partner Access, you would certainly see success in your ward.   As the Bishop delegates Family History  to the Elders' Quorum President, the Temple and Family History Leader is under the EQ 1st Counselor and as the Consultants report their successes to him, he returns and reports to the 1st Counselor, who in turn reports to the Ward EQ President, who in turn reports to the Bishop.

Assignments are made by the EQ President and RS President to choose someone in the organization to be diligent in helping those who cannot go to the Temple any longer but who have names to have work completed, gather them, distribute them and return them to the patrons.

The Bishop, should he choose, can call Youth Consultants to work with their peers, who work with the elderly who do not have computer skills (a very successful service opportunity, by the way).  He can call a few Primary Consultants - 10-year-olds learning more about family history who can be taught how to reserve and print a name in preparation for the year they enter Young Women's or Young Men's and are able to attend the Temple.

What are Temple and Family History Consultants able to do within a Ward?

Communication makes Ward Family History much Easier

What if the Primary is planning an event in the Spring and the Young Women are also planning an event in the Spring - on the same weekend?  Good Communication plans can help all factions dovetail the details together so that they can each see what is going to go on the calendar.
This workbook will give you ideas to choose from Family Search.  Each has a link to the section of Family History Activities which would most interest that age group.
This is not a reporting system - it's an opportunity to share and coordinate activities and to pool resources to effect a well rounded Family History Plan.  No names are mentioned as to who went to the temple, only that dates are planned for the ward.

  • Encouraging temple attendance without establishing quotas or reporting systems. (~Elder Renlund)
Each can plan their activity and the Bishop can send it to each Auxiliary in the Ward to complete.  They can discuss how to assist each other at the Ward Council Meeting.

Here is a link to the workbook for you to use:

Each page rolls the numbers to the last page - the Annual Roll up so you can track your activity by year.

We just ask that you download this to your desktop BEFORE you EDIT IT.......
THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING US TO SERVE YOU

We are Area Temple and Family History Consultants for the North American South West Area of Scottsdale Coordinating Council.  These are all suggestions we are sharing which we have seen work successfully.  If you are inspired to use these, which are based on the Handbook2, then we commend you on your insight.

With the Training of a Consultant we hear, "What do we need to know?"

With the Training a Family History Consultant
 we hear a lot of,
"What do we really need to know?"

Obviously, this lesson today isn't the most important part of what you do, but it prepares you for what you need to do so you can sit back, not worry about what you know and what you don't know and confidently and feel the Spirit guide you to documentation and evidence of family members of the patron with whom you are working.
The First thing a consultant needs is confidence.

"How do I get confidence if I barely know how to research myself?"

  1. Be a friend...

Ok!  This is where we can help.  You know how to be a friend.  It's no secret that our Mission has embraced the concept of being there for our friends who are being taught the gospel prior to baptism.

 What would Jesus do?
What would a friend do?

Think parallel universe!  It's ok now, and it actually always was, to go out with the missionaries and meet someone new.  You can offer to help them with a family tree.  You can tell them you want to create a fan chart for their wall.  If you don't know how to do that follow these steps...
2.  Help them get a free Family Search Account.

go to Familysearch.org
look for FREE account

3.  YOU need to be engaged with Partner access

and start a little tree for them in ANCESTRY.  As a member, only you will be able to see the little FS tree in Ancestry to click and will be able to see the ordinances, but this is a valuable step in the process.
Don't know about Partner Access?
Here you go!

"I Built My Tree in Ancestry, NOW what do I do?" - see video below
Some non-members will already have an Ancestry account - that's fine but you won't be able to link it to Family Search unless you temporarily create one in your own FREE Ancestry account.

4.   As you find more family members, you LINK them to Family Search.

When your person logs into Family Search only "one-click or two"  will populate her tree there.

5.  Once you have four generations and you can clearly see them in Family Search, VISIT TREESEEK.COM

"I built my tree in Ancestry, NOW what?" on our youtube.com site

6.  Now you can see 4 generations in Ancestry with documentation,

follow the instructions in the video above and link the documents to Family Search.

7.  Now go to TREESEEK.ORG

8.  Log onto Treeseek.com with their Family Search login and password

SAVE THE PDF ONTO A FLASH DRIVE AND BRING IT TO THE STAKE LIBRARY  - We have a printer at our home too.  It's an HP7610 if you want to be able to do this from your own Stake Library, perhaps they can work it into their budget.  We get the SUPERB paper from Amazon - about 40/pack, 13"x15".  Because it is pricey, we do charge 5.00 per print, but printers like KINKOS FEDEX  will charge upwards of 35.00.

You are going to help them sign in with their Family Search Login, pick a tree type they like and you can Print a Family Tree or Wall Chart illustrating their family in one of several ways - SEE BELOW

TREESEEK.COM

President Hinckley's talk on Members and people being taught
In nearly every talk, President Hinckley calls upon us to do more in helping new members and the less active. In Maracaibo, Venezuela, he said: “I plead with you … that you will put your arms around those who come into the Church and be friends to them and make them feel welcome and comfort them and we will see wonderful results. The Lord will bless you to aid in this great process of retention of converts.
“You know what it has been like. Most of you here are converts to the Church. You know something of the loneliness that you felt when you came into this Church. Now, will you please accept that challenge to warm up and be friendly to every man, woman, and child who is baptized into the Church? It all depends on you” (“President Hinckley Urges More Missionary Effort in Venezuela,” Church News, 14 Aug. 1999, 7).

What do you know?
NOTE:  Stake Consultants, if you would like to have a pool of dedicated individuals to help you run your Stake Family History Fairs, this is where it all begins.  Once you have a pool, you can help other wards with their Fairs too.

Decide what type of class you need from your Ward or Stake Temple and Family History Consultant...
Class 1- The Basics
  • I need to know how to sign up for a Family Search Account.  I can bring my login and password.
  • I need to know how to enter my name and my parent's names, and grandparent's names.
  • I need to know the birthdates, death dates and places born and passed of those 6 people
  • I may not know those, but know where to get them...
  • I do not know how to find a census
  • I do not know how to find birth records or death records
  • I do not know how to find a marriage record
Solution:  run don't walk to thefhguide.com and sign up for an account immediately - you won't regret it.
https://naswfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/2019/09/with-training-consultant-we-hear-what.html
Thefhguide.com is definitive and truly only sanctioned consultant training for Family Search consultants.

Class II
Class 2 - Beginning Consultant
Partner Access Training
Consultant Training
Consultant Flip Chart

SAVE ON YOUR DESK TOP WITH ANOTHER NAME, THEN PERSONALIZE

How to reserve a name in two different sysetems. (from our youtube.com channel)

We first make an appointment by adding a person to our CONSULTANT PLANNER, then using their helper number and user name, we can access their account and analyze their tree for success.

"But...I don't know the first thing about analyzing a tree and finding out what is wrong with their tree..."

You are about to learn, cheer up!!!

In 2017 the church abandoned the old manuals and opted for us to use the Spirit-Led, one on one, heart to heart way of teaching how to be a consultant.

It works!  Begin with Prayer!

This is an example of a One-on-One.   To do a successful One on One, you really need to look at the tree through the Consultant Planner.  It will give you amazing insights that the church doesn't actually teach you how to find.  It's just laid out in such a way, that you can logically see the errors once we show you what you are looking at.

We first tell them the duties of a consultant, then we enter HELP ON THE HELP BUTTON ON THE TOP RIGHT OF THE SCREEN, AND CLICK
HELPER RESOURCES,
You will find this as a drop-down menu from the HELP button when you log in

This teaches you how to best utilize the Consultant Planner, including basic things, like learning how to use a mouse properly, copy and paste, insert an image and much more.
Take notes and stop and reread when you don't understand.  When you have to read it yourself, you will absorb the data much quicker at your own pace.

CLASS 3 - Intermediate Advanced
  • Class 3 - Intermediate Research (Learning to Bridge from FS to Partners for more accurate research)
I now know how to do (and have accomplished) all of the items in Class 1 and Class 2
I  have been baptized in the Church to quality for the LDS Partner Access, have an LDS Family Search Account and will now be eligible to use Consultant Planner with Ordinances.
I have signed up for Partner Access and know what "minimized in the background means"
I have taken the Consultant Training Class
I know how to use the Consultant Flip Chart
Click the red and white sheet to learn about the Consultant Flip Chart and print one down:
I know how to Reserve and Print down a name

CLASS 4 - Intermediate Advanced
  • I know how to research and have filled out my tree pretty well.
  • I can identify problems in the tree just by looking at the Planner version of the fan chart from different aspects (birth countries, birth years, memories, sources)
  • I have at least 3-4 generations but there are some holes in the tree.
  • I don't have quite enough in my tree to make a fan chart look amazing.
  • I need to go back and learn how to cure "dead ends"
  • I need to learn how to enter things in a way that the database will flow better.
  • I need to learn how to utilize Puzzilla (video below)  and other advanced software research data.
  • I need to learn how to utilize Treeseek.com to help others create a fan chart.
CLASS 5 - The Technical aspect of Consultancy

Ultimately, your goal needs to be able to teach a presentation for something like a Ward or Stake Family History Fair.

Under our new Handbook2, The Temple and Family History Leaders in your wards will start assigning you one night a month or week to work at the Stake Library with your Stake Temple and Family History Consultant so that you can learn the technical aspect of teaching TFH.
  • I need a class on how to print on a large printer (the 7610 and a family fan chart)
  • I need to learn how to use Powerpoint.
  • I need to learn how to hook up a projector to a computer and cue it to the big screen.
  • I need to learn how to print handouts from a PowerPoint.
  • I need to learn how to use Excel so I can learn how to use a Tracker or Annual Family History Planner OR be able to create other useful tools myself.
  • I need to learn how to print a Powerpoint in Black and White
  • I need to create a PDF
  • I would like to learn how to create a graphic like a jpg or png.
  • I would like to learn how to create a video.
Sign up for this class from your Stake Temple and Family History Consultant

Again, obviously, learning all this isn't the most important part of what you do, but it prepares you for what you need to do so you can sit back and confidently and feel the Spirit guide you to documentation and evidence of family members of the patron with whom you are working.
