What is something through family history that has helped you grow closer to the Lord?

Just wanted to thank everyone who came to our Zoom last night.  I have added the videos part 1 and part 2 (my computer turned off during the zoom) - but we got back as quickly as we could.  We really appreciated the stories that were shared as to how family history draws you closer to the Lord.

We were especially grateful to the Jex family for sharing the message from the Ukraine 2nd Counselor in the Stake.

Your stories are uplifting and edifying.  We hope by posting them here, that others enjoy them as well.

Excerpts from Ted's story he told by Bishop Kurt Matthews

It's been a Crazy Week!  Sometimes strange things happen while we are filming and speaking with consultants and we get disconnected, disturbed, you name it.  The adversary does not want this work to get done and he does attack our efforts frequently, but we will prevail!  We love this work and finding out about others' family histories is so fascinating to us.  I had been working on the 1950 census deck for indexing which is next month's topic when I started to get tired and knew I had to get to bed early that Monday night but couldn't push myself away from the keyboard.  That's how this next story started...

It's been a rough week.  It started out Monday night getting ready for my 3rd hip replacement (the right one this time!).  We knew that we had to get up Tuesday morning to go to surgery at 4:30 am so we retired relatively early at 10:30.  Of course, I would have an anxiety nightmare and wake up at 1:30 wide awake.  I walked around the kitchen trying to decide if I could sneak a sip of just about anything.  Knowing the answer was an equivocal no(!), I sent myself to my chair without further adieu to distract myself with family history research.

After a few minutes, I heard loud voices outside my front door.  Suddenly there were loud bangings on my front door and someone was fumbling with the lock and handle.  I screamed, "Who is it?"  Nothing just more banging.  I told them to,"Go Away!" - nothing just louder banging.  I told them, "I will call the police!"  More banging.  I thought my loud voice would surely wake Ted but he was out for the count.  I was frozen with fear but finally got the power to make it to our room and wake him.  I tried to fill him in but I am not sure how much of my language was discernable... but the bottom line was, "Bring your gun!".

We went to the front door - he, unlike me, was tall enough to see over the door to the arch-like transom window.  The house across the street is a "coveted by all" very busy AIR BNB home.   He could see that a car was waiting across the street and the person had made his way back to the car.  We watched the rest from our camera room.  We could see and deduce that he was inebriated, (see no shoes, sunglasses still attached - probably been drinking since before sundown).   He walked a lot like me, but I doubt his untamed gait was caused by hip surgery.

Needless to say, only got maybe 2 hours of sleep that night.  The rest of the week was spent trying to get some semblance of independence back under my wing, learning to walk all over again.  Have you ever noticed when you are in the hospital, that they wake you up from a perfectly good sleep to give you........a sleeping pill?   That happened a lot and I kept thinking I would They had told me that I would be released the same day, go home and get a lot of restful sleep, but my body rejected that idea.  They couldn't get it to obey.   The operation was much longer than the normal operation as there was much to repair.   Apparently, my blood pressure would not raise.  It kept hovering under 80/40 the whole week.  Finally Thursday night we got 3 in a row about 110/70 and they let Ted come get me.

Long story shortened a little, I'm back!  I'm recovering and have already started the deck for our April Zoom which will be on "Serving others through the 1950 Census!"  We hope you will join us on April 9th at 5:00 pm - same zoom room, same password -

"Our message to the world is simple and sincere...We invite all of God's children...."

This has been a tough week, but we persevered and will come out smelling like a rose!

This week was my 3rd hip surgery.  The first was September 18, 2020, and it resulted in septicemia.  the second was in January to correct the first one.  This past Tuesday, we did my right hip.  It was quite an ordeal.  It's interesting that now, in some areas, for some people, they consider this operation a 1-day op and maybe might hold you overnight but chances are, they will send you home the same day.
Well gosh!   That's a tough order to fill   First, we prayed that we could endure anything that God felt we could experience.   I had a blessing.  That is always a positive experience, then I started making plans to do exactly what the doctors said   The operation took 2 hours longer because
It was needed to rebuild the acetabula head.  I was worried that this might happen because I  could feel the major shifting in the week before.  Well, I worried about something that didn't happen.  They didn't make me go home the first day.  I stayed 3.  Yes, there were good reasons but it's done and I am ln a good place now.
So this is a reminder that if you are nervous about asking a friend if you can help them with their family tree....say a prayer and do exactly what you are prompted to do.  That way, you will be in exactly the place Heavenly Father wants you to be as well.

On our next zoom, we’re going to be talking about some of the experiences that we’ve had and that others have had which have drawn them closer to family history and drawn them closer to the Lord. It will be more of a roundtable discussion but let me start and get you excited about this next Saturday the 12th at 5 PM.
We Often invite the missionaries to bring someone that they are teaching to the stake library so that we can help them find names in anticipation of their baptism so that they can be in compliance with the Prophet’s wish, Made known to all by David a Bednar at the 2020 leadership meeting,to have all converts go to the temple within 60 days with their own names. This one night a couple came in and the husband was being a little standoffish and wanted us to help his wife. We did as far as we could with her but she had PerĂºvian roots and my that wasn’t my forte but I knew who to hook her up with so we switched to him. Now, the missionaries weren’t going to have the family history lesson that day but they woke up in the morning and they were inspired after praying to call him and ask a couple to meet them there at the library for that specific purpose. We started with prayer then by asking him some questions about his Family, and I asked “didn’t you just tell me she died on May 19?“ He said yes. But everything I was pulling up, all the documentation, was guiding me to May 21 so I looked at him and I said just that. As I said the words “May 21” our eyes locked and we both realized that today was May 21. his eyes got as big as saucers and he said, “Oh my word she came to me in a vision this morning and I wondered why. She wants me to help find names to find her family “. Well he perked up and started giving me a little more information and a little more and pretty soon before 9 o’clock came, time to close, we had almost 250 names. If you give a convert enough names to go to the temple that many times during the year they will stay active for their life. And that is the reason why the prophet wants us to do the one on one spirit lead family history experience in lieu of curriculum.
I hope you will bring your stories and join us next Saturday at 5 PM March 12. Mountain standard time The invitation is Here on this blog and our NASWfamilyhistory.blogspot.com and also our Facebook page. We know this will be an uplifting experience for you. Yes, it will be only four days past my hip replacement surgery so if you see me smiling very big it was a success!
