NASW JUNE 2020 NEWSLETTER

NASW June 2020 Newsletter

In this issue....

Keeping teenagers' morale up during quarantine of Covid19.  Ways to combat depression for all ages.

Accepting the responsibility of caring for a new member after the Missionaries have dedicated their lives to bring them to the gospel.

Through prayer we were guided to help the missionaries...

One Thursday night the missionaries brought a couple to the library where we worked teaching family history techniques for success.  We had the privilege to work with a young man and his wife.  By the end of the night, it was evident that He was getting baptized within the month and was excited that he had names for the Temple already.  There was a line in which I had difficulty in curing a dead end.  I asked, since his parents were local could we call them and ask a few questions.  That was out of the question.  They had a prejudice against his new South American "member" wife, who was a lovely young woman,  and he was unable to speak with them.

There were no members from the ward at the meeting.  There was no consultant from their ward present.  No friends in the ward.  He went through with the baptism and immediately fell away.  The missionaries were devastated.  They couldn't seem to get a system going to hand off to ward successfully their precious gift of a well-taught new member to be welcomed, friend shipped further and accompanied to the temple within 60 days with many joyful supportive members.   Such became our teaching platform, the One Work Plan.

In this presentation, you can see that the system works.  This is a way for Temple and Family History Leaders to lead their ward effectively and by working with the Missionaries and Mission President, he gives them the list of Ward missionaries and Consultants and they pray as to who would be the best fit to friendship the new person being taught.  After that....it's all joy!

We met with the Zone missionaries last month virtually in an effort to teach them how to work with the Temple and Family History Leaders and Consultants. We met in the Mission President's office, he introduced us and our Elder was also online to watch our presentation.

This weekend we did part two and that was to show the Leaders how they can use the Missionaries, Consultants in working together with people being taught before baptism to get names, build a tree with the goal of a fan chart. During the teachings, the consultant is there with the FTM and becomes the new person's friend so that they can work on the goal of names, tree, baptism, then within 60 days go to the temple with their own names.

We have been training this way for 3 years as in all of our meetings it was verbal but not in writing anywhere. We had a chance meeting with Elder Bednar who answered our prayer, as he had vocally and very succinctly reiterated, "...go to the temple within 60 days with their own names!" On the stage after the presentation, we thanked him for that, and Elder Hamilton, my former stake president, asked us to send our One Work to him.

We hope you enjoy this and if it is something you also believe strongly in, you may use our examples. We are giving this Saturday night on a Zoom as many have requested a repeat meeting. It gives suggestions and ideas that we have seen work. Keep those emails coming.  Your comments inspire us to search for better ways to learn the nuances of family history and to simplify measures to teach the youth.  God bless you all!

Getting teens involved with Family History...

Covid19 has done some emotional damage to people of all ages but we are hearing more of this in the teenage years and elderly.
The teenagers are used to being with people!  There is a phrase, nothing is as important to a teenager as "food, friends and fun".   They are not used to being cooped up.  Of course, they are going to get testy after a while so give them a challenge.

  • Watch this video about teenagers and discuss it:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjRvFLyDVl4
  • Give them a scrapbook with
  • a pack of Kodak papers and show them how to print all those pictures from their phone onto paper.
  • Do the 21 day challenge with them.  For 21 days, they must do a little family history, ie., research, scrapbooking, writing their life story, helping a sibling write their life story, helping a grandparent.....anything as long as they do it for 21 days.
With elderly folk, we know that as their children, they depend on us for a kind word and communication regularly.  As people grow older they get increasingly paranoid of having strangers in their homes.  As their eyesight diminishes, they feel more vulnerable, be conscious of this, and extra considerate.  Here are some ideas to include the children:
  • Send Grandma a letter - print large print to help them read it or use a 48 font.  Watch this video with them and discuss it:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1srLpGaXsBU (THE MAILBOX)
  • Call her and ask her to tell you a story about when she was young.
  • Have her tell you her earliest recollection of life on earth.  Sometimes their memory of their youth is more vivid than one hour ago.
  • If you can record her stories, over the phone, you can upload them to the memory section for posterity.
  •

  • After that, you will witness
  •  a miracle.  they will develop a bond like none other to their ancestors!  email us - let us know how it goes!
  • This is the most precious part of family history....

    The stories you find!

This article will help you discover who your family is and who YOU are.

Here is an app that will allow you to download stories that directly impact your family.   From these stories and pictures, you could actually publish them on Amazon for free and have the family members all buy one for a few dollars.  This next one is my favorite app.  Before the early 1800s, there were only paintings, chalk and charcoal drawings and locating them maybe only as easy as trying to search on:  images.google.com   look for:

All the Stories is a simple, friendly tool for getting acquainted with the stories of your ancestors. Click below to synchronize with FamilySearch and download the stories of your direct ancestors and their siblings back 9 generations.

When will we be able to come back to the library?

In Arizona, the Governor has lifted the ban on going to church, but our inspired leaders are still holding off.  Just today 789 new cases have been reported and another 3 deaths just this morning bringing the total number of people with 1049 mortalities just in Arizona.  So until then, if you have any questions or problems like dead ends we are here from you at naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com or Mleerclark@gmail.com (Scottsdale Camelback Stake Family History Director)
    Monitor link:  https://www.azdhs.gov/preparedness/epidemiology-disease-control/infectious-disease-epidemiology/covid-19/dashboards/index.php

When our leaders are inspired that our safety is not an issue, we will all be back to church and the library.
