It's morning and 7,000 are without power...where's your records?

There used to be a public service announcement....

It said, "It's 11 o'clock....do you know where your children are?"  It gave parents a scare.  It made them think about their responsibility to always know where their charges were at all times.....making sure they were safe. It made them accountable for that gift which was given to them to take care of and nurture.

It made me wonder.  It's been raining for three hours solid.  The pool is close to overflowing....do you know where your Genealogy and Family pictures are stored?  Do you have them backed up somewhere in case of flash flooding?   How safe are your records?  Are you ok in the "preserving your family heritage" department?   I hope you are smirking right now instead of knee deep in water and cringing.

Well, last night we got over 1 inch of rain water and along with thunder, lightening and massive fear building non stop rain for over 3 hours.  Where does it all go when the ground can't absorb anymore so quickly?  Just one hour north of us, close to Prescott Valley, campers scurried to find high ground to avoid the flash flooding that took place last night.

Luckily, most of us have stored our family history in SEVERAL PLACES, and made copies.  But what about that box of paper records?
Paper and water don't mix well.

Photos don't work well with water.  They tend to ruin quickly at the mere mention of moisture and mildew.

Now that you survived and are just sitting there in the dark, contemplating your next move, open your emergency box of candles and take a few out and light them, if you happen to be one of the 7,000 without power this morning.
Now, since you are smarter than these campers in this picture, and not venturing close enough to rushing water to actually SEE it rise, rush past you (note, they are only about 2 feet higher and think they are perfectly safe).....well.....now would be a great time to make some changes in your life.  Take out a piece of paper and make some notes:

You can start immediately as soon as the power comes back on.  If you are reading this from your phone, just take a mental note that you and your family records survived the storm THIS TIME, but it's not too soon to start preparing just as you would with your Emergency preparation kit.

1. If you are a church member, take advantage of the Partner Access, (900.00 in free software) and upload your GEDCOM file to more than a few places (Family Search, Ancestry, My Heritage).

2.  Do you know how to export a copy of your tree?  (Living Scriptures has a tutorial about this in their 8/11/2018 edition).  It discusses the options for Ancestry and My Heritage.  Family Search does nOT have an option to export your gedcom.  You first must import it to a 3rd party software, then export it to your  personal computer.  While you are at it, export it also to a thumb drive then drop it off at the bank in your safe deposit bos!

Now you can consider yourself prepared....as far as your Family History is concerned.  Now as far as food, toiletries, emergency preparedness items.....that's another issue.  If you are emergency preparedness challenged and need a tutorial on that, may I suggest dropping by these sites, when your power gets fully restored.  Right now, save your battery on your phone and wait it out.
