THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FAMILY HISTORY – OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2018
How many times have you been gathering documents for your tree and attached them to your tree, thinking you could then later make an educated discernment about which ones to keep. Sometimes this is tempting to do, especially when you do a query twice and somehow you get different results and are concerned you might never find that particular document again. The next time you feel an impulse to keep it, think twice.
PROBLEM: The query system adds hints, or leaves (depending on your software) to let you know it found something that matches data already attached to your tree. So if you show a James Thomas with wife Elizabeth arriving in New York in 1916 and then you also show a James Thomas with wife Elizabeth arriving in New York in 1908, the hint system will send you information for both. The problem becomes a compound fracture the more arrivals you decided you couldn’t part with.
STRATEGY: Here’s a strategy you might want to employ.
- FIRST, start with the first family to come from another country.
- Click on timeline.
- Look at your Immigration/Emigration records and see if
- you have duplicate arrivals?
- Now, Find that family on the first four census and
- check when they told the census taker they arrived. (Sometimes they remembered the exact date.)
- Going back and deleting the incorrect year will put you back on the correct path.
- Make sure to document your sources.
Examples from timelines and data in the tree More hints and training help will be helpful.
