Which DNA test is right for you?

As Area TFHCs we thought we should try several and see which ones most closely followed our research so that we could recommend the most accurate.

Ancestry has been flawless, and a contact actually helped me break through a 40 year wall to find both our DNA on a small island off the coast of Galway called Innishboffin, Galway, Ireland...not Galway, Ireland.  Who knew?  That leg of my family tree had been blank for many years as all we had was a scrap of paper with the siblings names of my Great grandfather and the word Galway.

My heritage was interesting as at first our records said that I was Japanese and my husband, whose grandparents spoke fluent German, was not German. When we wrote to the CEO, suddenly the results paralleled our research.

23andMe was interestsing as it pegged my Mother and Grandmother's Macular degeneration and a few other surprises which might take me out. Also it showed that I have a gene, which if I had two of them, would have taken me out when my kidneys failed at 10 months when I had the flu, but I recovered probably because I only have one of that gene.

The most recent one was from Australia  called Living DNA- we were so touched by the marketing that we thought we would try it. It showed the % from the Iberian Coast - the tip of North Africa which has been touted to be the Cherokee tribe or traceable evolutionary path of the lost tribe of Israel to the tip of Africa - sailing to the East Coast and landing in Georgia/Carolinas.  This is just a theory and as of 2014-2017 it was touted as incomplete - but with a nod to the future and more test results it may surprise all of us.

All were very interesting and to quote Br. Tanner from our ward, "The definition of the Millenium, is that moment when we realize that our sister was not the greatest Genealogist". Well, DNA helps us find out if we are on track with our research, so if you haven't tried it, you are missing an important element of research ~ Ted and Karen Meyer, naswfamilyhistory.blogspot.com.
