2020 - Why do I need Goals?

WHY DO I NEED GOALS?

Russell M. Nelson says,

Why do people choose goals?  What is the big deal?  How can they help me?
People choose goals to help them improve in a certain area.  Keep reading and we will show you how to break down a goal to make it manageable. In ancient the Roman religion and myth, Janus is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, doorways, passages, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces since he looks to the FUTURE and PAST at the same time.  January is named for Janus.  It is a New Beginning for you... Goals typically are comprised of a few groups.  One is Temporal.  An example of that would be, I want to buy myself a new car.  Another is health-related.  I want to lose weight or work out every week.  There are learning goals and there are Spiritual Goals.  What are your goals for the year? There are many types of goals.

Our job on this earth is to learn as much as we can in this short time we have.  If we are always stretching for something in our lives, we are always growing and never stagnant.  Make sure that one thing you want to achieve is a SMART goal.

Your Goal should be a Specific Goal - direct, detailed and meaningful.
When I was a Girl Scout there was a girl who would go down the list of merit badges and have her mother sign off all the things she had already done so she could get more merit badges.  That probably wasn't the most ethical choice.  The idea is to pick something that you need to improve and work towards a viable success point.  A viable success point is a point at which you can now see a difference in your Spirit, your physique, your emotional behavior.  You need to stretch!

Your goal  should be Attainable and is quantifiable to track your progress or success.  You can make a chart in excel to chart our your weight loss, or to read something edifying each day - whatever you like!

Your goal should be realistic and you have the tools and/or resources to attain it.
If you say you want to lose 100 pounds in 3 weeks - that is not even possible.  If you say you want to Read the Book of Mormon in 1 day, that is not attainable.

This is the perfect time to assess what you accomplished last year and how it will affect your life next year.  There are many types of goals, it could be to become more self-reliant.  We met some wonderful people in our self-reliance class and learned so much about how to improve our business.  Ask your Bishop if you can take a class!

more empathetic, less dramatic (!), give service, become more charitable!  There is a great church-sponsored website called justserve.org.  You input your zip code and it will give you opportunities where people just really need charitable service!  It's probably right around the corner - check it out!   https://www.justserve.org

You get to choose how you want to improve.

Maybe it's a big secret that you haven't read the Scriptures in their entirety in years.  You aren't alone - many people want to accomplish this goal and don't know how to start.  There is actually a great way to plan this out so that if you do a little every day, you will be a success!  Here's a great link to a plan to help you!

What is your Family History Goal?

Is it to help others?  How will you accomplish this?  Who will you call?  Write questions that help you outline your goal.  Before long, you will have indexed ### records, or you will have preserved ### memories, or you will have gone to member's homes and recorded their stories for their posterity.  So many options you can choose!  What a noble goal you would have!

Maybe you have 8 kids and feel like you don't have any time.  My mother's favorite quote and the most relevant one at that, was, "You ALWAYS have the time to do the things you REALLY want to do."  That's so true.  When you are excited about doing something, you get ready a little faster, maybe leave a little earlier to get there early.  It has to do with your attitude.  Maybe you have no kids left in the nest and are trying to garner time to finally do the things you want to do.  First, decide what it is you want.

  • Make a List of Wants and Needs.
  • On the list of Wants, cross off anything unrealistic.
  • On the Needs, cross off anything that is more of a "want"

Keep eliminating until you feel you know what you want to improve.  Guess what?  You already knew before you made the list.  Your subconscious kept eliminating the obvious until it drilled down to what you deeply know you need to fix.

Pray about it.  Ask Heavenly Father to help you accomplish that which you need to improve.  Raise your hand if you believe He will help you.  You're right.  Once you put it into writing and commit to it, he will keep it at the forefront of your mind.  He won't keep temptations from trying to knock you off track, that will just embolden your desire to fix the problem.

Every time you get distracted and try to "jump ship" on your goal, He will gently bring it to the forefront of your mind.  Then, you can reorganize your priorities and start fresh.

Not only is the 1st of January a great time to make changes, but every Monday is also what I call, "an opportunity to start fresh".  Having just received spiritual enlightenment the day before, on Mondays, I am ready to start over and do it right.

Every night, in your prayers, you can pray to do better the next day!  He will keep the thought to "do better" in your mind or anything you just prayed about, while you are sleeping.  That is one reason why praying is so important to your psyche.  Right after you pray, you go to bed.  Your conscious will know what you asked for help with.  Your subconscious is ready to program your mind all night with those positive steps for success.

~Original Quote~ by Napolean Hill, "What the mind can conceive and believe  - it can achieve".

It all begins with you!  You can do much more than you think you can.  As a matter of fact, we often will say a lower goal so we won't appear foolish or to be a dreamer.

Just believe in the possibilities

But honestly, you can dream all day, but unless you put forth the effort, it's not going to happen.

HOW DO I WORK A GOAL?

Visit the Rising Generation on Etsy for more of these great ideas.  I purchased this for you!

You need to break it down into small bites.
Start with the phrase, "one year".  What is that?
365 days
52 weeks
12 months

Decide.....

What will you achieve at the end of 30 days?  60?  3 months? 6 months?  12 months?

What will you learn in 26 weeks?  What will you learn every week?  How much will you read to accomplish this?

How healthy will you be in 12 months if you have lost 40 pounds?  How will it improve your emotional outlook?

Once you have come up with your goal, write a positive affirmation statement about it - When you put it in your own handwriting, your brain will believe it and you will achieve it.

"I will change my life one day at a time.  My goal is to eat healthier and fewer calories, so that I can lose 2.5 pounds per week.  At this rate, I can lose 50 pounds in one year.  I will help my mental outlook and physical well being and preserve this Temple the Lord has given me."

Read something like that which you have personally created each day to embolden your choice and increase your odds of completing the task.

Good luck and let us know how you did!
