The Story of You!
Have you ever had an adult child say, "Grandma you've told us that story a hundred times." I remember my brother, (when he was about 9 and I was about 6) saying it to my Grandmother. She looked around, avoiding his stare as if something were wrong with her, then with all the courage she could muster, she sat up straight and gave him "what for!"
With a stern eye and a shaking index finger, she wound up for the pitch. "You listen to me young man, and you listen well. When you are my age, every story is precious. Why anything I can remember about my parents is such a distant memory that I have to keep repeating it to keep their faces fresh in my mind. What will you do when your children ask you to tell them the story of how their Great Grandfather came to this land?" How will you remember the story of him almost getting pinned between two railroad cars? How will you be able to tell your children about being grateful for grocery stores? Running water in the house? Indoor plumbing? You know, not an outhouse? We had to grow our own fruits and vegetables. We raised livestock for our meat in the winter. Store? Maybe the general store where we got yardage to make our own clothes, or flour and sugar if someone was having a birthday."
He looked down and pawed the floor with his shoes. "Grandma, maybe you should start from the beginning. I'll learn the stories well enough to help the young ones not forget you."
Tears welled in her eyes as she stroked his head and pulled him close.
Garry blushed a little and said, "I guess I didn't know you had it so rough. No stores? How did you get ice cream of candy?
"Oh, there was candy. You could get a whole sack for 5 pennies. Rough? We didn't know any different. We loved every minute of our lives."

Read our newsletter this month below for some ideas to get your own story and family tree back on track, and thank you for all of the countless hours you spend helping others. We appreciate you so much. We get letters from all over the country from people whose lives were blessed because of a Consultant who went the extra mile and helped them break through a brick wall of incorrect information. Have you watched our "Consultants are like Detectives!"? https://youtu.be/mdbkL2lWzQA See if this is helpful!
If you do not have a new 2020 family history ward plan - see if this will help your team.
Why is everyone all excited about Roots Tech? At this time of year, the instruction from the First Presidency is disseminated through Elders over Family History to Family Search and then to us as Area Temple and Family History Consultants. We take the messages to help our Stake Presidencies carry out the direction or focus for the Stakes worldwide. Elder Kevin S. Hamilton will be in attendance and the line up of classes and booths is really building to a climax of planning and coordinating to achieve the theme for the year of "The Story of You".
This year, all the booths and sessions will have something to do with helping you to share your story. You. This is an inspiring subject because we don't want any consultants to get frustrated or burned out. We need to replenish your well with ideas, technology and plans to inspire you to help your ward members. We genealogists spend so much time helping others that sometimes our own tree doesn't get the appropriate attention it needs. As Consultants, we break through challenging barriers in time to help others, but our own dead ends remain a mystery. In celebration of all of the time and hours that each consultant dedicates to the Lord through their calling, this year's Roots Tech will help you take a breather and prepare your own story for your posterity. We have put together some ideas to help you in this newsletter! Ready, set go!
Youth working with elderly in the ward
This year, the theme for Roots Tech is “The Story of a You”. Here's a challenge to write about. What have you done or what has someone done for you to sacrifice time and talents to make your life more special?
In 1969, Ted, wanting to do something really special for me, sent me a bouquet and a lovely filigree bracelet. We lived 400 miles from each other. I never knew until 37 years later when we met again that he was working for .75 an hour doing gardening for a l o t of hours to send these beautiful flowers from San Luis Obispo to Danville with that beautiful gold Filigree-bracelet for (that you can’t see in the picture) my 16th birthday.
What story can you document about your life? Can you think of something which might encourage someone to find the courage to do something special for another person? Would your 16-year-old do something so incredibly thoughtful? Ted's parents must have been very proud! I hope you will sit down and jot some treasured memories down. When they are locked away in our hearts and minds, they can’t be used to uplift and edify or teach others about how to create tender mercies in other peoples' lives with the help of the inspired writings you document. You have that power to do so!
Also, write to us and let us know what knowledge we can ascertain for you from going up to SLC for Roots Tech to help you further your journey. Where are you stuck in your tree? Have a dead-end you'd like us to investigate? Naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com. Visit our naswfamilyhistory.blogspot.com to learn about an easy and fun way to start a ward family History plan.
S0 now, what is your story? Here is a little video on how to get started. This is what we use when we are invited to visit assisted living facilities here in the area. Some of the activity directors want to keep tenants' minds healthy and active, in an effort to encourage them to use their time left in a productive way to preserve history for their downline generations to come. SOMEONE WANTS TO HEAR THEIR STORY! Below is a wonderful story about a young woman who befriended an elderly person at a bus stop. She went out of her way to listen to her stories and even showed her how to take a selfie. We have so many older people in our ward and what a wonderful project to engage the youth, who are so computer savvy and literate help an older person type up their story for their grandchildren. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/08/30/young-woman-befriends-lonely-91-year-old-at-bus-stop-and-helps-h/
This presentation was just rolled into a video but if you would like the powerpoint so that you can motivate others, please email us and we will send it to you. https://youtu.be/F8xG2Z4FMBo
First, a number of classes from RootsTech (including the keynote general sessions with speakers like LeighAnne Tuohy and Emmitt Smith) will be streamed live on RootsTech.org free of charge. Second, for those with temple and family history callings, a virtual pass giving access to more content can be purchased at a discount using the discount code CallingsVP.
Ward clerks and Executive Secretaries would really shine if they put this next item on their Presidency's calendars. There will be a Leaders' meeting on Thursday Night - February 27, 2020. Last year, only 30% of all leaders watched the informative meeting which asked all wards to come up with a ward Plan. If that has been a struggle for you, and you are not sure where to start, perhaps you would like to look at something that the Presidencies in our stakes that we represent just loved. It is a Ward Annual Family History Planner. It gives links to ideas for each faction of your ward leadership for family History on FamilySearch.org If looking at it causes you to come up with an even more brilliant idea, please share your success with us so that we can help others who are struggling - you can email us at naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com
If you would like to download anything in this file, please do so, but change the name of it slightly on your desktop so as not to change our original. The system will want to try to save yours to our onedrive.
No one asked or consigned us to make these helps. We do so for the Stakes that we represent and they are appreciative of the help. If you can think of something which improves this, please let us know so that we can help others improve their ward Plan. Though we mostly work with our own stakes, as followers of Jesus Christ and the Spirit of Elijah, we would not turn anyone away who asks for assistance. Please let us know if you need help.
Thefhguide.com folks always have something amazing at their booth. If you get a chance and you are attending RootsTech this year, make sure to put on your class list of "must go"s Bob Taylor's presentation. Ballroom B (Friday, 1 p.m.) is "Learn, Search, and Succeed with The Family History Guide". That presentation could also be used for consultants who want to sharpen their saw and make progress with their own family history goals. They also have mini-classes at the booth, and Scott and Angelle Anderson will be presenting "Discover What The Family History Guide Has to Offer" at the Demo Theatre, Friday 10:40 a.m. We will be at thefhguide.com booth from 4-7 on Friday afternoon of RootsTech - February 28, 2020, helping out. Hope to see you there - please drop by and let us show you how to find the amazing "Come Follow Me" guide which is a companion to the Church's new Sunday School program. It is so helpful for FAMILY NIGHT (!) and it puts a family history spin on every lesson!.
Recently the Family History Leadership was changed from Elder Bradley Foster to Elder Kevin S. Hamilton. As we welcome Elder Hamilton, it is bittersweet that Elder Foster leaves us - but with a legacy, through a video he remains an inspired leader in our hearts. Elder Hamilton was our Stake President in Newbury Park, CA, since then he has been led by the Prophet to many adventures, from a member of the African Area Presidency to other areas of the United States.
NEW HANDBOOK TO REPLACE HANDBOOK2
Almost all of our teaching aids follow the Handbook2 - but this new online version will be exciting to read. In anticipation of this upcoming conference, make sure you read this online handbook, watch the Leadership Meeting on Thursday Night of Roots Tech, February 27, 2020 and take your vitamins! You'll be prepared for the upcoming surprises promised by the Prophet at Conference.
