How do you do this Family History thing?

Thinking in terms of a timeline will calm your brain and keep you from squirlling!
Sometimes if you aren't focused, your mind can float on all this data and you get lost.

You may know exactly what to do but start with the basics - just the left column has, who you are looking for and her parents and who she married.

This is her mother's basic information - remember women keep their maiden name in genealogy to keep the lines straight, but they die with their married name.  So in the final search for an OBIT or headstone, take out the maiden name and input the married name for a pure search.  You will get faster results.
I thought you might like to have a couple of blank forms to play with so here are a couple of jpgs that will print out as an 8.5x11 and a link to a pdf with the sample data and blank fields to enter your data.  Let me know if this is helpful.

How do you do this Family History thing?

Saturday, August 11, 2018

It's morning and 7,000 are without power...where's your records?

There used to be a public service announcement....

It said, "It's 11 o'clock....do you know where your children are?"  It gave parents a scare.  It made them think about their responsibility to always know where their charges were at all times.....making sure they were safe. It made them accountable for that gift which was given to them to take care of and nurture.

It made me wonder.  It's been raining for three hours solid.  The pool is close to overflowing....do you know where your Genealogy and Family pictures are stored?  Do you have them backed up somewhere in case of flash flooding?   How safe are your records?  Are you ok in the "preserving your family heritage" department?   I hope you are smirking right now instead of knee deep in water and cringing.

Well, last night we got over 1 inch of rain water and along with thunder, lightening and massive fear building non stop rain for over 3 hours.  Where does it all go when the ground can't absorb anymore so quickly?  Just one hour north of us, close to Prescott Valley, campers scurried to find high ground to avoid the flash flooding that took place last night.

Luckily, most of us have stored our family history in SEVERAL PLACES, and made copies.  But what about that box of paper records?
Paper and water don't mix well.

Photos don't work well with water.  They tend to ruin quickly at the mere mention of moisture and mildew.

Now that you survived and are just sitting there in the dark, contemplating your next move, open your emergency box of candles and take a few out and light them, if you happen to be one of the 7,000 without power this morning.
Now, since you are smarter than these campers in this picture, and not venturing close enough to rushing water to actually SEE it rise, rush past you (note, they are only about 2 feet higher and think they are perfectly safe).....well.....now would be a great time to make some changes in your life.  Take out a piece of paper and make some notes:

You can start immediately as soon as the power comes back on.  If you are reading this from your phone, just take a mental note that you and your family records survived the storm THIS TIME, but it's not too soon to start preparing just as you would with your Emergency preparation kit.

1. If you are a church member, take advantage of the Partner Access, (900.00 in free software) and upload your GEDCOM file to more than a few places (Family Search, Ancestry, My Heritage).

2.  Do you know how to export a copy of your tree?  (Living Scriptures has a tutorial about this in their 8/11/2018 edition).  It discusses the options for Ancestry and My Heritage.  Family Search does nOT have an option to export your gedcom.  You first must import it to a 3rd party software, then export it to your  personal computer.  While you are at it, export it also to a thumb drive then drop it off at the bank in your safe deposit bos!

Now you can consider yourself prepared....as far as your Family History is concerned.  Now as far as food, toiletries, emergency preparedness items.....that's another issue.  If you are emergency preparedness challenged and need a tutorial on that, may I suggest dropping by these sites, when your power gets fully restored.  Right now, save your battery on your phone and wait it out.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS KITS CAN BE FOUND AT:

AMAZON.COM
COSTCO.COM
Stealthangelkits.com
Emergency kits.com
mypatriotsupply.com

but the best thing you can do for your posterity is a thumb drive - here's a great deal

Your chance to Inspire others.....
Great activities can be planned across all auxilliaries with family History.    Family Search is looking for inspirational stories where people received revelation that their searches were fruitful.  Any stories, especially of 11-12 year olds learning more about their heritage and their feelings about the journey are especially requested.  At our North American Conference, they stressed they would even come and film locally if the story was what they were seeking to inspire others.  Please send your stories to us at naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com

A new directive...

With so many apps to "Take a Name" or "Find a Name", people have been submitting up to 3,000 names without verifying if the work has already been done or not.  The brethern would like us to slow down a little and get to know those members on the other side of the veil.  Take time to find out more about their lives, read local town histories of when they were living there, read journals to find out how they solved their problems.  As you truly take the time to know them, your spiritual experience in the Temple or even working with your tree, will become more intense.  You will feel their gratitude as you honor them.

Training the 11 year olds

Many of you probably saw President Oaks and Sister Oaks tremendous presentation at Roots Tech this year.  If you haven't, here it is in it's entirety.  We use a snippet of the program in our 11 year old training.  There is a reason the Prophet has told us to use these young people in such a valiant job of preserving our heritage.  The most important ones are the protective blessings they will receive for doing so.
Visit our Youtube Channel to view our Train the Trainer.  Let us come and present this to your Primary Presidency, Beehive Advisor, Deacon Advisor and Elder's Quorum President.  Call us or email us today and set up a time for any Tuesday or Wednesday night at your building.  480 262 3525  naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com

Relief Society and Family History

Each Sunday, add a short sharing moment and encourage the sisters to pray to find out something about a relative.  They can search in any realm, software, google, journals, but bring a picture to Relief Society to share.  Do this in anticipation of taking a special day at the Temple with other Sisters.

Young Women and Young Men and Family History

Organize a service project.  Divide the ward list up and have each YW/YM call them and either interview them over the phone or make an appointment to meet with them.  Let them tell some stories and have the youth type them up as they talk.  This will increase compassion for them.  They will learn so much!  Assign at least 3 YW/YM to be Family History consultants.  Training is on our Youtube channel.  Help them help others succeed in documenting their history for their posterity.

Just a Shout Out...

Congratulations to Scottsdale North Stake last week for an amazing program.  We were there to be of service in Family HIstory if needed.  The Peruvian Celebration drew over 400 people.  There was music, dancing, free food and they DID run out eventually, but it appeared to be almost like the "fed 5,000" miracle.  Everyone had exactly what they needed!  Good Job - let's see more events like this.  What a good example to other Stakes!

How could that be? Well...it couldn't...

Things that make you go....hmmmm?

We run across situations all the time where someone, who shall be nameless for this example, has exuberantly tried to stretch the facts to fit the puzzle.  Really, this could be any of us!  We want so badly to do the work and just really want it to be right, but hoping just doesn't make it so.  So, we need to be patient with ourselves and step back and look at the data with discernment.

When you want something to match so badly...are you tempted to falsify the documents?  Be careful.  If you don't have the proper sourcing identifying your records, your work won't be taken seriously.
Case in point....

Patron told me that in her line.....there was a Mother and Father who married and had three of the six kids in Scotland in 1686.
Then they moved to Utah in 1710 and had her Great 3x Grandfather...then the rest of the six children (#5 and 6) were then born back in Scotland.  She found a family who arrived in Ellis Island in 1896 with all the same names.

I had a really hard time trying to convince her that she had the wrong data.  How did I know?

 1) Yes, she did find a family in Findmypast with 6 children all coincidentally named Mary, James, Joseph, John, Michael and David after the Saints.

2) It is a fact that many families named their young after Uncles and Aunts and Great Uncles and Great Aunts.  Sometimes it's even trying to make sure you have all the right names slotted into the correct generations because the similarities are so ominous.

3) Many times, you will find family on passenger lists, but not this family - there was 200 years between 1686 and 1896 - The correct part was that Ellis Island opened in 1892...

4) She was certain that her G3 Grandfather Michael was born in Utah....but in 1710, there were very FEW organized census data.  Most of the data was from something called "compiled census", meaning, if there was a meeting at the town hall, and they took roll call, then those people were on the list.  Utah was not even a state until:  January 4, 1896, however...we DO have census data on the Territory of that area from 1850 forward.

5)  It is very very rare that a family would come all the way from Scotland, have one child and go back on that horrific ocean journey with 4 children (including a baby) to have two more in Scotland.

Conclusion!  Unless you have the documents, delete the data from your tree and work only with documentation that you really trust.  Then hold your head high.  It's better to have correct data and less of it than guess your best guess and be off.

NASWfamilyhistory Newsletter for August 2018 by TedKarenMeyer

What you always wanted to know about Calling someone to a Family History Position

The 60 day Convert Tracker

The 60 Day Convert Tracker

We lose members when they don't feel needed or important.  They fall away because they lose a sense of purpose.  Getting them involved with a friend to help them with Family History is the number one way to get them excited about their life.  When they find along the journey that they actually have Mormon ancestors, they will feel like they belong!

The problem is when no Temple and Family History is assigned to a new person, No one makes sure they are on track for the temple.  Everyone thinks  someone else is working with him.  There is no communication.   Assuming that this is not part of their calling comes into play.  Apathy enters the picture.  Our convert walks away...

We had an amazing tracking system where we got the young man to the Temple within 3 weeks with his own names.  The goal was 60 days.

WE ALL WORKED TOGETHER for SUCCESS.

With the consultant assigned and involved, every member in the playing field had the login and password to the link to make sure he was progressing.
This meant, the lead Temple and Family History Consultant updated the form every time an event happened to progress him.  The Ward Mission Leader, the Bishop, the Young Men's President, his Teacher's Quorum President, the Mission President and the Stake President.

Are you sure you are looking in the right State?

Are you sure you are looking in the right State?

Here's your scenario.  You have hit a brick wall.  You can't find your person anywhere.  They said, "He was born in 1792 in Tennessee."  Family Search shows 1792 in Tennessee but no sources.

Let's see.  Dead End.  No records, no sources?  This happened to me and I was inspired to look at the date more carefully.  My mystery man was born in 1792......but Tennessee was not a State so how could they have any records?  I found the records, with correct birth and marriage, wife's maiden name in North Carolina.
Tennessee became a State in 1796.

If someone lived in a "state" all their life they would just say, "I was born in Tennessee."  They would not say, "Well, I was born in the part of Tennessee that used to be part of North Carolina."  It probably would not have even entered their mind to include data in their conversation about the border changes!  Not part of normal conversation, right?

Notes[change | change source]

  1. Jump up↑ Also known as the "Three Lower Counties Upon Delaware." Delaware became a state on June 15, 1776, when the Delaware Assembly formally adopted a resolution declaring an end to Delaware's status as a colony of Great Britain and establishing the three counties as an independent state under the authority of "the Government of the Counties of New Castle, Kent and Sussex Upon Delaware." [2]
  2. Jump up↑ Between 1749 and 1764 the provincial governor of New Hampshire, Benning Wentworth, issued approximately 135 grants for unoccupied land claimed by New Hampshire west of the Connecticut River (in what is today southern Vermont), territory that was also claimed by New York. The resulting "New Hampshire Grants" dispute led to the rise of the Green Mountain Boys, and the later establishment of the Vermont Republic. New Hampshire's claim upon the land was extinguished in 1764 by royal order of George III, and in 1790 the State of New York ceded its land claim to Vermont for 30,000 Dollars.
  3. Jump up↑ The Virginia General Assembly adopted legislation on December 18, 1789 separating its "District of Kentucky" from the rest of the State and approving its statehood.[11]
  4. Jump up↑ The exact date upon which Ohio became a state is unclear. On April 30, 1802 the 7th Congress had passed an act "authorizing the inhabitants of Ohio to form a Constitution and state government, and admission of Ohio into the Union." (Sess. 1, ch. 40, 2 Stat. 173) On February 19, 1803 the same Congress passed an act "providing for the execution of the laws of the United States in the State of Ohio." (Sess. 2, ch. 7, 2 Stat. 201) Neither act, however, set a formal date of statehood. An official statehood date for Ohio was not set until 1953, when the 83rd Congress passed a Joint resolution "for admitting the State of Ohio into the Union", (Template:USStatute) which designated March 1, 1803, as that date.[14]
  5. Jump up↑ The Massachusetts General Court passed enabling legislation on June 19, 1819 separating the "District of Maine" from the rest of the State (an action approved by the voters in Maine on July 19, 1819 by 17,001 to 7,132); then, on February 25, 1820, passed a follow-up measure officially accepting the fact of Maine's imminent statehood.[11]
  6. Jump up↑ On May 13, 1862, the General Assembly of the Restored Government of Virginia passed an act granting permission for creation of West Virginia.[28] Later, by its ruling in Virginia v. West Virginia (1871), the Supreme Court implicitly affirmed that the breakaway Virginia counties did have the proper consents necessary to become a separate state.[29]
  7. Jump up↑ When President Benjamin Harrison signed the statehood proclamations for North and South Dakota he shuffled the papers on his desk and covered up all but the signature line of the documents. No one knows which state he signed into existence first. North Dakota's proclamation was published first in the Statutes at Large, as it is first in alphabetical order.[31]
  8. ↑ Jump up to:8.0 8.1 Brought into existence within moments of each other on the same day, North and South Dakota are the nation's only twin-born states.
