WHEN DID A STATE BECOME A STATE????

                          https://1drv.ms/w/s!AjS2RGb0p-4Ppx-gOd7ciMvgX0c0?e=C0Osra

You need this pdf handy in case someone says they were born in a year before the state was even a state.  What state was before it?  That is where the records just might have been - in the state at the closest boundary.

You can't say I was born in California in 1843 if it didn't become California until 1850...Our last zoom goes over this in detail.  Just scroll back and watch the examples.

FAMILY HISTORY GAME -     Sample page with dummy information (not real) gives ideas where to search if a teacher were to try to find information.

Then you give the information of a real person and family and let them look at the sample info and place the markers in the right order.  * markers  are at the bottom - cut apart and put each set into a different envelope... they will need glue or tape.

Your prayers, both in crisis and in routine, are ALWAYS heard...

Our Message to you for February

Karen and I would like to thank all of you for the prayers you have proffered on our behalf. We cannot express enough the deep gratitude and love we have for all of you. The uncertainty of these last 12 months produced extreme turmoil in our everyday lives. How we shop, worship, gather, and greet each other to mention just a few. For many our lives and activities completely changed. Facial recognition of friends and neighbors is now refined to everything above the mask. You still see the smile in their eyes.

Elder Ballard reminded us: Jesus taught His disciples to “watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” And In the Doctrine and Covenants, the Savior said, “And all things shall be in commotion; … for fear shall come upon all people.” The drums of fear have been sounded loud by many. Commotion abounds. The actions taken to stem the spread of the virus have left many feeling isolated and alone. Elder Ballard stated and I echo his words: “I think often of those of you who are suffering, worried, afraid, or feeling alone. I assure each one of you that the Lord knows you, that He is aware of your concern and anguish, and that He loves you—intimately, personally, deeply, and forever.”

We need not fear. John 16:33 tells us: “In the world, ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” That is where we are today. We are uniquely blessed for the guidance of our Prophet Russel M. Nelson. Many thought the changes over the past few years of reduced meeting hours and the implementation of “Come Follow Me” home-centered gospel programs as a significant change in our usual way of worship. Think back over this last year. If we had not implemented the Prophet’s changes, how would we continue learning and being blessed?

Every change, every move, and every time we thought this is different and embraced these changes, we were preparing for the events of last year and this year. God prepared us to not only endure these events but to thrive and grow our faith and testimonies. You are never alone or isolated. God and your elder brother stand with you. The adversary planned to do evil to God’s children, but God though our Prophet prepared us. All this came to us through prayer which led to a revelation. Jesus said: “Pray always”. What does that mean to you? Give that some thought. How often is “always”? Is it once or twice a day? Is it once a week on Sunday? Is it only when I need or want something? Is prayer always at the tip of your tongue and the forefront of your thoughts? We are more likely to pray when we are in need or experiencing difficulty.

The truth is, Heavenly Father loves us and loves to hear from us – both in praise and in need. How many times since you awoke this morning has prayer and praise been on your minds and tongue? Did you wake up grumpy or did you rejoice at still being on the right side of the grass? Do you pray every day? That brings to mind one of many favorite hymns: “Did you think to Pray?” The song takes us through situations and asks in the chorus. “Did you think to Pray?” There are strengths and power in prayer. Prayer conditions your spiritual acuity. We can access many gifts through prayer. Have you thought of what those gifts are? Gifts of the spirit. One key aspect of our spiritual acuity is to recognize we need to act on the promptings or what we sense and hear.

Some have a refined sense of hearing and pick up the spiritual indicators. Some of us are a bit harder at hearing those prompts. God needs to really get loud with us. Do you want to calm your fears? Exercise your spiritual acuity. When we engage in any spiritual activity or just everyday life, we need to pray. Do you witness something touching or beautiful? Thank God. Are you going to read scriptures? Begin and end with prayer. Wondering about a scriptural passage? Stop and pray. Listen for that guiding impression. Are you going to do a family history? Pray. Listen for that inspiration. You will be inspired. Are you at a crossroads and unsure of the next step? Pray! Listen. Your path will become clearer.

My son had fallen and fractured both front teeth. He is not a member. I offered him a blessing and he accepted. In that blessing the message was clear. This was going to be good and the dentist inspired. He asked later what I thought was going to happen. I said: “I believe the blessing, it’s never wrong”. The media has hyped fear and sown dire consequences and uncertainty. We have seen unprecedented attacks on the very fabric of our society, the family, and faith. Fear is overcome through our focus on drawing closer to God and Jesus Christ through exercising our spiritual acuity and taking on His name . Prayer connects us to Heavenly Father. Communication with our Heavenly Father and Jesus is through KNEE MAIL. Prayer tunes acuity and brings us peace! Pray! Don’t think someone else will do that for you. Get personal with God. Elder Ballard said: “I invite you to pray always.7 Pray for your family. Pray for the leaders of nations.

Pray for the courageous people who are on the front lines in the current battles against social, environmental, political, and biological plagues that impact all people throughout the world: the rich and the poor, the young and the old.” We are in this meeting house worshiping as a direct result of a young man’s prayer seeking an answer in an isolated grove of trees. I am certain young Joseph did not expect the answer he received, but it was an answer to prayer and he was obedient. I taught in Gospel Principles that prayers are usually answered in 4 ways. "Yes, No, in my own time and way, and lastly, you have got to be kidding."

Another key aspect of our spiritual acuity is taking action. Brother Sanft taught us well on the topic of responding to promptings. When prompted swing into action. What good is getting a prompting to take action, if we do nothing? It might be the urge to call or visit someone. Ask that uncomfortable question. Believe me, this could be just the thing they need. It could be very important; even lifesaving. You will be blessed if you heed the prompting. None of us are perfect. That is why we have the sacrament. We pick ourselves up from a week of trying and strive to do better by preparing for the next week by partaking in the sacrament. Embrace this Sojourn of life. Live it to the fullest!

Karen was struck twice in the last three months with an infection that spread to the circulatory system or sepsis. I saw the progression the first time her healthy vigor was replaced with extreme pain then the onset of a fever that peaked at 103.5. We contacted the surgeon who did not want Karen to go to the ER. My prompting was to go to the ER. I realize now that I should have acted upon that prompting. Months of pain and treatment followed with ebbs and improvements, but never to where she was before the infection. Things were looking pretty promising. Then….. The second infection started out in the same way – extreme pain. Again the doctor said on Sunday after sacrament; don’t go to the ER and to wait until Tuesday when he was back in the office. I was prompted to take Karen to the ER. I was not going to let the doctor’s advice trump the prompting.

Just before Karen went to the ER, she received a priesthood blessing that said the medical personnel would be inspired and guided in her care. She had no fever when I took her to the ER. I was not allowed to stay with her. Before this pandemic I would have been able to stay with Karen. Karen felt alone, isolated, and fearful. She knew prayer would help . She said a prayer and was granted peace. I felt helpless and isolated. I prayed and received assurances that she was going to be OK and I was granted peace and comfort. Shortly after her arrival, Karen began to run a fever and experience disorientation, a precipitous drop in blood pressure:  95/35, and vomiting. The systemic staph infection had come back with a vengeance. Now, she was experiencing symptoms of toxic shock. I know how terrible this can be. I lost a friend to this and there was nothing that could be done to stop its progression.

Karen’s doctors were inspired to treat and admit her against to protests of her surgeon. An infectious disease doctor was at her side within minutes of being alerted to Karen’s symptoms. The infectious disease doctor told her later that night after being stabilized that if she had waited a few more hours she would not have survived the septic infection. He marveled that she had survived four months with an infection that usually kills the patient in a few days. We know-how, the power of prayer. The doctors at the hospital went to battle for her because they were inspired (their own words). There were elements still working against her even in the hospital. But inspired and guided medical professionals cared for her. 10 days in the hospital. How do you fill the time? Karen said she missed her sewing. I delivered a number of items via Hubby Dasher, she calls and I deliver, but a sewing machine was not going to be one of them. So, how do you think Karen filled 10 days? You got it, doing Family History. A prayer-filled activity. Karen being here today would not be possible if it were not for all the prayers and priesthood blessing. Those prayers brought in the medical professionals to advocate on Karen’s behalf and inspire them to act beyond normal boundaries. The infectious disease doctor would visit her late into the night with the newest test results.

Thank you for all those amazing prayers!! Brothers and sisters, I implore you to pray always. Tune your spiritual senses and tone your spiritual acuity. There is no greater peace in this world than to have a heavenly father and Jesus Christ at your side to bring peace and serenity into your soul. Therefore, pray always, trust in His guidance, and be prepared to take action when called upon. “I know you thought to pray!” We felt those prayers and we thank you. Never stop praying. Pray always! May your prayers bring you peace that will always be with you, In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

HERE IS THE INFO FROM OUR ZOOM FOR 1-9-21 - !

Zoom Meeting for Family History

It was wonderful going through the new handbook and listening to your challenges and ideas for your Stakes and Wards.  The beauty of our faith allows the Priesthood Keyholders, Stake Presidents the opportunity to use their personal revelation to know what is best for their Stake, yet using the Handbook2 as a guide.

Our tools in this pdf. of the Handbook2 Presentation are just that.  These are tools that have worked for other Stakes and Wards and are being used to increase activity.  The brethren are not interested in increasing "numbers", "quotas", or watchdogging who goes to do Family History Work and when, because they know that increased activity will also benefit each family in countless ways.

Our recent newsletter shows President Nelson's list of how to grow closer as a family using family history and we hope you will read the corresponding article on Family Search.  It will bless your life.  In his address in October 2020, from the General Conference were these words:

"President Nelson made his remarks in the context of the gathering of Israel, which he called “the most important work in the world.” He said the Church of Jesus Christ is latter-day covenant Israel.

He defined the gathering of Israel as drawing all people to Christ through missionary, temple and family history work, as well as helping others build faith and testimony.

He was stirred recently, he said, to learn that one of the meanings of Israel in Hebrew is “let God prevail.”"

Our zoom was a lot of fun but it was interrupted by a total blackout right in the middle! so there is a link to video PART 1  and then come back and click on PART 2

Thank you to all who came and shared your experiences!

THIS PRESENTATION WILL SHOW YOU ALL THE HANDBOOK WITH PICTURES.

WE HAVE ADDED LINKS TO OUR TOOLS SHOULD YOU WANT TO TRY THEM.
WE HOPE THEY WILL BE A BLESSING IN YOUR LIFE AS OTHERS HAVE TOLD US THEY HAVE BEEN TO THEM.

THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS, TEMPLE AND FAMILY HISTORY, ZOOM MEETING WITH TED AND KAREN MEYER

January 2021 - Zoom Meeting is coming up!  We talk a little about it in our newsletter.  Won't you read it and if you want to learn more how to do family history, just email us!  naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com

In this issue, we focus on the new updates to the handbook which will be the subject of our Zoom this Saturday, setting goals, and beginning the new year solving research challenges!

I0 ways to grow closer to the Lord through Family History

The following are excerpts from an article on Family Search called

10 Ways to help your Family be closer to God

  • Read God's word together.

  • Serve Others together.

  • Express love for each other often.

  • Go to Church together.

  • Start traditions together.

  • Pray together as a family.

  • Teach good values.

If you have any other questions, please email us at naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com

How can I possibly grow closer to God by doing boring,

monotonous research?

Boring? Monotonous? Ah! Methinks you need a change of attitude. Let me help you set the scene in your mind. I'm an expert at attitude adjustments! Close your eyes for a moment.

Imagine yourself in a beam of light stepping onto your family cloud in a celestial place. It seems far away and yet close and personal at the same time. You see gates made of gold, open and the light emanating from within shines on beings walking towards you. The light shines on their backs in a way that makes them glow as if they have wings. The rays keep you from seeing their faces but you are sure that they know you...

One reaches out and as she touches you, you feel instant love. It is so powerful that you start to tremble, not in fear, but in awe. She smiles and says, "Thank you! There was a mistake in the file and you stayed with it. You got what you needed to do my work. I've been waiting almost 300 years and you were the one that made it happen. I can never repay the debt."

Her words touch your heart so much that tears literally fall from your eyes and without a sound, you are transformed. The feeling of overwhelming love and satisfaction fills your body and you realize that maybe it wasn't so boring and monotonous as you once thought. As a matter of fact, you are a little surprised that you ever had those thoughts go through your mind. We can't know exactly what is going to happen when we cross the veil. We can only hope that our work is acceptable to a loving God and grateful ancestors who have the opportunity to move forward because of our labors.

Researching Family History is so much more than just looking at records. It's thinking with your "whole heart" and opening the valve to celestial communication from beyond the veil. As you search, those spirits will attend to your soul. They will buoy your spirit when you become discouraged and they will cheer when you reap the benefits of your work.

Remember that perseverance is a virtue. One meeting a few years ago in Salt Lake, a Family Search Manager said,

~"Anyone can print out thousands of cards and flood the system, but when you slow down a little, in a way that will help you really get to know your ancestor, the whole process will become more personal." ~

In your mind, you may visualize a relative as he signed the paper which would allow him to dedicate his life to his country during the war. Now you have his signature. As you read on the World War I document, the color of his eyes, his hair, his body type, and any frailties, which would obviously exclude him from the opportunity, you can't help but feel empathetic. There, on that one document, you can put the whole picture together. Not only do you see his physical attributes, but you see how he made a living (his occupation). You will see who his boss was and what he did for that company. You will also see if he was a son living with his parents, or if he was a husband and father at that special time in his life.

Finding these when you are doing research will give you courage to go on. Use tools that will help you go forward. So often, if you aren't using research tools to keep track of where you have been, you constantly circle around and click on the same file over and over again. Do you need some research files to help you? You can click below - something just might be the key to your moving forward with a new positive attitude of love for your ancestors.

Growing closer to God...

when adversity strikes.

Our message to you this month

No one has to tell you that 2020 has been probably the most challenging year of our lives. It's no secret that the adversary lies in wait for our faith to wane before he sidles up to our side to suggest another way...a way away from our beliefs. If ever you needed to grow closer to your Heavenly Father it is now.

It is easy for me to pray for others, but I was raised in a different faith, and engrained in that psyche of mine is a voice that says it is selfish to pray for yourself. This is wrong. You need to pray to Heavenly Father for yourself as well as for others. He will work miracles in your life. You may not see the miracle as it is unfolding, but it will become self-evident.

In September of this year, I had hip replacement surgery that went septic, leaving me without the ability to walk. When I finally started praying for answers, and for the Doctors to come up with a solution to cure the pain that kept me from healing, I heard the words from this scripture: In Proverbs 3:5–6, we read this counsel:

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.“In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Focusing on this, I came to hear the spirit whisper that these moments would pass but that I would grow closer to my Heavenly Father if I trusted him.

This past Sunday, after starting yet another round of antibiotics, was my first time to return to the church building for services. It was an emotional experience and it felt like I was home. The counselor in the Bishopric gave me a blessing. In that blessing, he paused and then said, "...that through this experience, I would grow closer to my Father." So this affliction has improved vastly and I can see a positive path to returning to normal. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but I have faith that if I lean not unto my own understanding and lean on the Lord, He will direct my path in all things. So our message is to listen to the spirit, especially when you are doing family history. Those spirits are actively trying to get your attention. They want to help you with your research. When you pray first before doing your work, you will be buoyed by angels who do not want to be forgotten and they will help direct you to the path to uncovering more opportunities for temple ordinances.

President Bonnie Cordon in 2017 gave a great talk about this subject, Lean not unto thine own understanding...I hope you will read it, think about it and start your New Year right!
