Family History Centers - are you up to date?

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS NEEDED TO RUN A FHC SUCCESSFULLY?

Recently, in preparation for opening up our Family History Center after the long COVID break, we were made aware of a great many shortcomings which needed to be fixed.

Did you know or were you previously aware that:

1.  The computers in your Family History Center do not belong to your Stake?

2.  They are maintained by your Stake Staff, yet must comply with specific technicalities, from permissions to admin logins and passwords.

3.  You are not supposed to change any of the settings to make it more comfortable for you to come to the center.  All the settings are mandated by the Director's directions from SLC.

4.  Why can't you store your pictures and family history files on the Library computer.  That is why God made USB files or thumb drives.  You can take your files anywhere you want to go!  But please do not save them on the desktops at the center.

5.  We know that sometimes you forget your login and password and need to use your email on the desktop - that is fine - please do not store your password there for the next time you forget.  It is helpful to carry a notebook with you when you come.  So many times, hours are lost of precious time between the Stake Consultant and the visitor because they don't have logins and passwords they need.

6.  What logins and passwords do you need?

    1.  Family Search

I am not including the links to these (2-7) because if you saw our presentation on Partner Access, you know that you should sign up from these from the member access page.  To learn more about Partner Access and how you can shorten your research time and increase your success go here:  https://naswfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/2021/08/what-delightful-and-informative-zoom-we.html

    4.  Geneanet

    5.  American Ancestor

    6.  Find my Past

ZOOM FOR SEPTEMBER 2021 - REDUCING YOUR RESEARCH TIME AND INCREASING YOUR SUCCESS RATE AS A CONSULTANT

 The Gift!

Consultants have been given a precious gift of discernment and when used with the Spirit, prayerfully working with someone on their family tree, they are given many blessings.

Our zoom today will help your consultants so much because it will give them the knowledge to successfully navigate through a one on one with a patron and increase their self-esteem.  It will give them several quick key tips to help a patron get more opportunities for Ordinances.  There is great value in convincing them that they do not have to be an expert on the first day they are called as a consultant.

Hope you enjoy it.  We sure enjoy all of you who come to our Zoom meetings.   It is very rewarding to help you and we enjoy learning from your expertise as well.  This past zoom we welcomed people from Australia, UK, New Zealand, Haiti, Canada, many USA states, and of course, Arizona!

See you next month - the subject has been finalized and we will be showing a Stake Handbook on Policies and Procedures as well as ideas for Stakes to pull the wards together.  October 16, 2021 at 5 pm AZ time.  Mark your calendar !

TODAY - YOU WILL KNOW Everything there is to know about "Partner Access!"

When Partner Access was first released to the membership of the church in 2019 - people did not realize what they had been given.

This is quite a gift to receive access to 7-8 other websites that usually charge upwards of 900 per year combined to access their records....from your home....are you getting the picture?

Do you want to know how to use them effectively?  Do you want to learn how to lessen the time spent in countless hours of researching in circles and get right to the data?  If so, we will teach you an easy bridge technique so that 1) the partner will not charge you as a member of the church and 2) learning this technique will increase your accuracy in achieving your goals, and 3) It will make that endless circle of "I've seen this record before..." go away.

PLUS - SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER WILL BE

Kathryn Grant,

America's Secret - Insane Asylums of the 18th Century - our next Zoom call for June 2021

America's Secret - Insane Asylums of the 18th century

We often have someone who was in our family tree, suddenly disappear without a trace of a death certificate.  From 1820 to about 1910, many people were sent to these "hospitals" without the benefit of a diagnosis from a medical doctor.  If they were "greedy", "cantankerous", "cranky", "spoke out of turn", "talked back to their parents", any strange reason for not being able to take care of a family member...could land them in an Insane Asylum.  Sometimes, as in Independence, MO., the asylum was also the jail until the jail was built.  There was no exit card...no way to get out unless someone came and got you, or you passed away in the facility.  There are cemeteries on some of the grounds all over the United States.

With our  Zoom meeting, you will receive links to the various record keepers for these closed facilities.  Why were they closed down?  People lacking education made judgment calls when they couldn't control their families.  Making these calls subjected their family members to terrors much worse than "standing in the corner" or being "benched".    You may have heard of the reporter Nellie Bly, who dedicated 10 days of her life to pretend to be insane and stayed in one of these torture houses.  Her report turned these practices on their ear.     We didn't know very much about mental health back then.  Real doctors actually used these places to perform frontal lobotomies, convinced that they could change the behaviors of the inmates.  They tried shock therapy and other means of restraint.  It's a very sad state of affairs and though we have grown so much in the departments of Psychology and Psychiatry, you may have relatives who are wanting to be found.

Please join us on Saturday, June 12, at 5:00 pm
for this informational Zoom meeting.

                                                 Zoom for June will be

                                             Saturday,  June 12th at 5:00PM.

The topic is:
Asylums and Family History and the evolution of the Census taker...

Anyone who is missing someone in their family for which there is no death certificate could possibly have been institutionalized during the years 1820 to 1910.  So,  if they were on one Census and disappeared on the next...and perhaps you see their children living with relatives...we will show how to find the databases of patients during that time period.

Dear Friends - you are more than welcome to leave comments but unless you leave your email, I won't be able to connect back with you.  You can always email us at naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com

You need this pdf handy in case someone says they were born in a year before the state was even a state.  What state was before it?  That is where the records just might have been - in the state at the closest boundary.

You can't say I was born in California in 1843 if it didn't become California until 1850...Our last zoom goes over this in detail.  Just scroll back and watch the examples.
