How can I possibly grow closer to God by doing boring,

monotonous research?

Boring? Monotonous? Ah! Methinks you need a change of attitude. Let me help you set the scene in your mind. I'm an expert at attitude adjustments! Close your eyes for a moment.

Imagine yourself in a beam of light stepping onto your family cloud in a celestial place. It seems far away and yet close and personal at the same time. You see gates made of gold, open and the light emanating from within shines on beings walking towards you. The light shines on their backs in a way that makes them glow as if they have wings. The rays keep you from seeing their faces but you are sure that they know you...

One reaches out and as she touches you, you feel instant love. It is so powerful that you start to tremble, not in fear, but in awe. She smiles and says, "Thank you! There was a mistake in the file and you stayed with it. You got what you needed to do my work. I've been waiting almost 300 years and you were the one that made it happen. I can never repay the debt."

Her words touch your heart so much that tears literally fall from your eyes and without a sound, you are transformed. The feeling of overwhelming love and satisfaction fills your body and you realize that maybe it wasn't so boring and monotonous as you once thought. As a matter of fact, you are a little surprised that you ever had those thoughts go through your mind. We can't know exactly what is going to happen when we cross the veil. We can only hope that our work is acceptable to a loving God and grateful ancestors who have the opportunity to move forward because of our labors.

Researching Family History is so much more than just looking at records. It's thinking with your "whole heart" and opening the valve to celestial communication from beyond the veil. As you search, those spirits will attend to your soul. They will buoy your spirit when you become discouraged and they will cheer when you reap the benefits of your work.

Remember that perseverance is a virtue. One meeting a few years ago in Salt Lake, a Family Search Manager said,

~"Anyone can print out thousands of cards and flood the system, but when you slow down a little, in a way that will help you really get to know your ancestor, the whole process will become more personal." ~

In your mind, you may visualize a relative as he signed the paper which would allow him to dedicate his life to his country during the war. Now you have his signature. As you read on the World War I document, the color of his eyes, his hair, his body type, and any frailties, which would obviously exclude him from the opportunity, you can't help but feel empathetic. There, on that one document, you can put the whole picture together. Not only do you see his physical attributes, but you see how he made a living (his occupation). You will see who his boss was and what he did for that company. You will also see if he was a son living with his parents, or if he was a husband and father at that special time in his life.

Finding these when you are doing research will give you courage to go on. Use tools that will help you go forward. So often, if you aren't using research tools to keep track of where you have been, you constantly circle around and click on the same file over and over again. Do you need some research files to help you? You can click below - something just might be the key to your moving forward with a new positive attitude of love for your ancestors.

This excel sheet will allow you to enter the family names and years of birth - it will then calculate each age of each family member for each census - making it easier to match the family to the census.

Growing closer to God...

when adversity strikes.

Our message to you this month

No one has to tell you that 2020 has been probably the most challenging year of our lives. It's no secret that the adversary lies in wait for our faith to wane before he sidles up to our side to suggest another way...a way away from our beliefs. If ever you needed to grow closer to your Heavenly Father it is now.

It is easy for me to pray for others, but I was raised in a different faith, and engrained in that psyche of mine is a voice that says it is selfish to pray for yourself. This is wrong. You need to pray to Heavenly Father for yourself as well as for others. He will work miracles in your life. You may not see the miracle as it is unfolding, but it will become self-evident.

In September of this year, I had hip replacement surgery that went septic, leaving me without the ability to walk. When I finally started praying for answers, and for the Doctors to come up with a solution to cure the pain that kept me from healing, I heard the words from this scripture: In Proverbs 3:5–6, we read this counsel:

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.“In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Focusing on this, I came to hear the spirit whisper that these moments would pass but that I would grow closer to my Heavenly Father if I trusted him.

This past Sunday, after starting yet another round of antibiotics, was my first time to return to the church building for services. It was an emotional experience and it felt like I was home. The counselor in the Bishopric gave me a blessing. In that blessing, he paused and then said, "...that through this experience, I would grow closer to my Father." So this affliction has improved vastly and I can see a positive path to returning to normal. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but I have faith that if I lean not unto my own understanding and lean on the Lord, He will direct my path in all things. So our message is to listen to the spirit, especially when you are doing family history. Those spirits are actively trying to get your attention. They want to help you with your research. When you pray first before doing your work, you will be buoyed by angels who do not want to be forgotten and they will help direct you to the path to uncovering more opportunities for temple ordinances.

.

President Bonnie Cordon in 2017 gave a great talk about this subject, Lean not unto thine own understanding...I hope you will read it, think about it and start your New Year right!

May you be

Blessed with the refiner's fire and  fuller's soap

in 2021

This link will take you to our Zoom last night.  It was a review of a lesson we taught earlier last year, showing your Consultants with a few tips under their belt they would be able to listen with the inspired new ability to receive personal revelation.

It is our hope that you will go forward and teach with exuberance, those of your ward, including your friends and family.  Calling All Detectives was designed with the Consultant's self-esteem in mind.  The word "Consultant" seems to denote, in our society, that "I have so much knowledge and ability that I can advise others in this field."   That can be so overwhelming to someone who may be just learning how to document their family history.  You do NOT have to be a card-carrying, certificate bearing genealogist to become a Temple and Family History Consultant.

https://1drv.ms/u/s!AjS2RGb0p-4Ppw0l-OMryCHwH4nG?e=1njj7J

All you need to know is that God has blessed you to have the power of discernment and the ability to find opportunities for success, to break through virtual brick walls and meander further up thru the sunshine of God's love and the leafy treetops of your family tree.

Our tools will help you do just that.  Last night was our last Zoom for 2020.  We hope it all goes better next year for you.  We hope that your dreams and aspirations for your family history will start fresh in January 2021.  But most of all we hope you are safe and healthy.  For those of you who were too ill or busy with the Holiday and Family life to join in, we did record it.

This has been a rough year.  This has been a year like most of us have never experienced before and it might scare you for your future.   People have lost family...jobs...homes...dreams...and other things that make their lives comfortable.

Remember, a new beginning starts as a mustard seed.  If you have but one ounce of faith you can move mountains!  May your experiences be for your good, strengthening you like a 'refiner's fire'.

24 Behold, the great aday of the Lord is at hand; and who can babide the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appeareth? For he is like a crefiner’s dfire, and like fuller’s soap; and he shall sit as a erefiner and purifier of silver, and he shall purify the sons of fLevi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an goffering in righteousness. Let us, therefore, as a church and a people, and as Latter-day Saints, offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness; and let us present in his holy temple, when it is finished, a book containing the hrecords of our dead, which shall be worthy of all acceptation.

As you start to plan for 2021, think about the mustard seed.  It is one thought, one particle of God's love for you.  Let it take hold and grow one tiny root at a time.  Before long, you will have a plan for your life, your family and hopefully your family history because I hope.......you are writing down all that you endured this year and how you emerged victoriously..  After you and I are gone, others will be left behind to figure things out.  They will need a guide.  Your journal could be the uplifting and edification which they seek.

2 But who may aabide the bday of his ccoming? and who shall dstand when he appeareth? for he is like a erefiner’s ffire, and like fullers’ gsoap:

Just remember that we love you.  We don't know God's plan for us.  He chooses every little "roll out" as we can take it.  We have to be strong so he will give us a little more to work with.  If he dumps out more than we think we can take, then we need to go back and realize that

God never gives us more than we can handle and

..."Through these refining fires we will become stronger...."

…8And in all the land, declares the LORD, two-thirds will be cut off and perish, but a third will be left in it. 9This third I will bring through the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on My name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are My people,’ and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.’ ”

  • Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: “Just when all seems to be going right, challenges often come in multiple doses applied simultaneously. When those trials are not consequences of your disobedience, they are evidence that the Lord feels you are prepared to grow more (see Proverbs 3:11–12). He therefore gives you experiences that stimulate growth, understanding, and compassion which polish you for your everlasting benefit. To get you from where you are to where He wants you to be requires a lot of stretching, and that generally entails discomfort and pain” (in Conference Report, Sept.–Oct. 1995, 18; or Ensign, Nov. 1995, 16–17).

  • Elder Neal A. Maxwell, then of the Presidency of the Seventy: “Afflictions can soften us and sweeten us, and can be a chastening influence. (Alma 62:41.) We often think of chastening as something being done to punish us, such as by a mortal tutor who is angry and peevish with us. Divine chastening, however, is a form of learning as it is administered at the hands of a loving Father. (Helaman 12:3.)” (All These Things Shall Give Thee Experience [1979], 39).

October Zoom meeting will be held October 10, 2020 at 5 PM Arizona Time

INFORMATION FROM TONIGHTS ZOOM MEETING IS BELOW!

Do you ever feel like the heaviest person on the see-saw? Not able to achieve the perfect balance in life? We've all been there. You are busy at work trying to find the 2nd husband of Aunt Idabel and little person tugs at your sleeve.
"Mom, when will you be done? You said we could go to the park!"
"Not now, Tommy, Mommy's almost got the answer to the big family questions. I've got to fix my family tree!"

Well, sure, you need to spend time with family on BOTH sides of the veil, but remember that later in life you will miss the little things that happened while you were pre-occupied with Aunt Idabel. This is the most important work you will do...raising your family and fixing your family tree. How do you get a balance? You do so by learning as many tips and tradeoffs that you can so you can spend less time researching and more time getting results an- thereby having more time with your children now! How do you do that? Well, our Zoom this month is about learning how to use the gifts you have been given. Partner Access is literally a gift to you from the Church. Seriously, we used to spend upwards of 600 per year on research tools and memberships to various websites. Now it's free. Do you know that about $800 per year now is given to you as a member? Come to our Zoom meeting and let us show you how to achieve a balance on the scale of life?

Information is in our Newsletter for October. Do you have that yet?

Primarily Primary for 2020

Our September Zoom Meeting will be on September 12, 2020 from 5-6PM Arizona Time

WATCH THE MEETING HERE!

https://1drv.ms/u/s!AjS2RGb0p-4PpmEFdCULZ2hGelJm?e=TMsyKV

What DID we cover?

How many ways can we introduce Family History to Children?  How do we teach them to value their family experiences?  What have you been doing to increase your family connection while COVID19 has been rampant?  Grandparents get lonely without family connections - This presentation will not only be great for Primary Presidencies but for families in general to give them ideas for success!

Part of family history is teaching how to document events with family for others to read in the future.  Activities with Grandparents can be precious and more so when their voices are recorded and uploaded to the Memories section of Family Search.  During the presentation, we will explore different ways kids can experience Family History

Primarily Primary is a program that we created to help the young 11-year-olds who will be transitioning in January to the Young Men's' and Young Women's' programs.  Giving them a little heads up on genealogy terms, and having consultants work with the family, great things can be learned just by playing some of the Family Search apps.

This Zoom will cover:

  • Primary Counselor over Family History role
  • Handouts on the links in our presentation
  • Handouts to use in working with the youth.
  • Suggestions for goals a young primary child could have for the project to pick from.
  • Certificates of Excellence are available if you want them
Also, we will give you links to these from our One Drive.  Please send us an email before you download anything.  Thank you.

The PDF of this event will give you links to what we discuss.

Notes from our August 15, 2020 Meeting

Notes from our August 2020 Zoom Meeting

Thank you all for coming and participating!  It was great meeting you and finding out where you come from and how you are still managing to share family history, stay sheltered in place and work with others.  Here are some notes we have taken and summarization.

We discussed

  •  training of Relief Society Presidencies and Elders Quorum Presidencies.
  • the fact that the HC over TFH does not have to do the training alone.  He can pass the tools to a trusted Stake Consultant and step back waiting for opportunities to personally mentor.

If you need tools, here is a matrix for them:

You are welcome to download and use them.  Please don't change any of the verbiage as it is just as it appears in the handbook, or straight from our notes from our meetings in Salt Lake City.  Once you download anything, please change the name slightly by adding a 1 or if you DO make a change, our one drive will try to save it over our originals.

The important role of the Stake Temple and Family History Consultant

The important role of the Stake Temple and Family History Consultant

All callings have incredible value to their Wards and Stakes, but we've noticed that the Stake TFHC has the most contact with the outside world and we value their kindness and friendliness to their Community.

Did  you know that Genealogy is considered the 2nd most popular hobby in the world?  A lot of people in and out of the church agree with this.  Though....it's difficult to see where the polling came from to substantiate the truth, I choose to believe it.

“ …hobby experts believe that genealogy ranks second only to gardening as American’s favorite pastime.” --
-- ABCNews

According to ABCNews, genealogy is second to gardening in terms of popularity.

USAToday discusses the roots of genealogy’s popularity

This makes the contact points between the Stake Libraries and Consultants and the public crucial.  When calling someone to that calling, YOU are the PEOPLE PERSON that Elder D. Todd Christofferson refers to in this quote about callings.  Of course, he is more general speaking about all family history consultants, but consider the fact that you have the most visibility to non members, you should be on your toes to reach out and befriend new families and friends to help them with this amazing hobby.

“If I were a bishop again, my approach would be to charge the [TEMPLE AND FAMILY HISTORY LEADER] high priests group leader with the responsibility to lead out in the ward council on this subject. I would ensure that we had one or more . . . family history consultants who were ‘people persons’ who could work under his direction. . . . I imagine that in the course of a year we could help at least ten families. In five years, we could have a corps of fifty families active at some level in family history and its attendant temple work. That to me would be a successful, well-run program.”
Elder D. Todd Christofferson

We will discuss this more on our ZOOM meeting this Saturday at 5 pm Arizona Time.  Here is the invitation.  Though we have 9 Stakes, we have a large membership room on Zoom and invite others to come and share what they have done in these COVID19 times to help increase awareness about genealogy and encourage non members to seek out the gospel.  We hope you have been watching our previous 2 zoom meetings about inviting the Missionaries to help you so that by the time someone is interested in baptism, they already have over 100 names to keep them busy for the entire first year of membership right up until they are sealed (if that is their desire) or take our their endowments.

See you Saturday!  This is our meeting ID and Password:
