New from RootsTech 2020

Rubies from RootsTech

Love to share these jewels with you.  The more knowledge you have the easier Family History research and documentation will be for you.

Memories for Ruby

This year, I lost a special friend.  I had only known her for 12 years.  She had been on this earth for 98 years.  Before her wonderful, caring husband Ken passed on,  they would come over to our home, sit on the couch and we would put their tree up on the big screen and hunt for names.  It was a lot of fun.  Her favorite color was red.  I got her a red had with rhinestones and she wore it everywhere, even in bed.  I remember when someone asked me to create a birthday card for her  95th birthday.  I can't tell you what a joy it was to do that.  Now you know, someone who has lived from before radio to the most iPhones will have lots of memories to share with her four daughters, 16 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren.   That means her name is in the Family Search System 55 times.

She asked me every time I visited her why she had to wait to be dead to upload
her stories.  "...and what I have in there, my grandchildren cannot see!"  I agreed with her.  I prayed that they would fix it before she passed away but that just didn't happen.  So now, with great care, all 55 names must be merged into one.   they must be very careful not to merge the wrong way as to preserve the ordinances.

This is a common problem that I heard recently from Ron Tanner will be fixed. It's in the pipeline, Ruby!   Soon, you will be able to not only see your living relatives  but you will be able to create Family Projects together and let the whole family enjoy them.  You will be able to upload your stories, your pictures and your grandchildren will not have to wait until you pass away to appreciate your legacy.

Now people will really be able to collaborate not only on their dead but on their living .   Now, this video is from 2016 but Ron said that it is getting closer and we will let  you know when that is going to happen - just know Family
 Search is ON it!

Leadership Meeting attendance larger than ever!

Thank you so much to those in our Stakes to get the word out to their
leaders in their Wards to watch the Broadcast.  The Leadership Meeting streamed annually is the single most important meeting you should be attending.  I want you to know that being in that room was awe-inspiring
and I only hope you get the same feeling from watching it, too. It gives
you the basis for a Ward Plan and how to exercise it.  Of course, your
personal revelation for the needs of your Wards is the magic ingredient.
OUR MESSAGE TO YOU
Family History keeps teens out of trouble, it keeps us from doing things
we shouldn't, it is a cure for depression and anxiety, it draws you closer
to your Father in Heaven, it creates an unbreakable emotional bond with
your family beyond the veil.  Our personal message to you this month is
to go back and watch the 2019 and 2020 Leadership meetings and see
what magic you can create in your ward.
PLEASE iNVITE US TO SHOW YOU A PRESENTATION OF
HOW YOU CAN DO ONE WORK - MISSIONARY AND FAMILY HISTORY AND WORK MIRACLES IN YOUR WARD.

Our best wishes to you and your families!

NEW FOR WARD CLERKS - HELP FAMILY HISTORY CALLINGS GET MESSAGES FROM SLC

If you are a Ward Clerk, we are grateful for your service.  We would ask you to please help them with these changes in the system.

Have a look inside the new handbook - combined 1 and 2 online

A Look Inside the New General Handbook for Church Leaders and Members

Congregations of all shapes and sizes can adapt the book’s principles to their needs

The new handbook for leaders and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (first announced in January) is now available in English online and in the Gospel Library app. Nine of the 38 chapters have been completely rewritten, and one section of another chapter has been updated. See the summary of the changes below. Also see a list of frequently asked questions.
Titled General Handbook: Serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this book replaces both Handbook 1 (for stake presidents and bishops) and Handbook 2 (for all other leaders). The new book (digital only, with a few exceptions for some areas) is accessible to anyone and will be updated regularly to give it requisite flexibility to help thousands of leaders around the world adapt the Church’s various programs, policies and procedures to their circumstances with loving, pastoral care.

In the version released today, nearly 80% of the content has been transferred from the old handbooks and reordered in a new organizing structure. Why have only nine chapters been rewritten? With changes to several important chapters completed in 2019 (see, for example, here and here), Church leaders decided to expedite the production of a new consolidated handbook instead of updating old resources.
“Our original plan was to completely rewrite the handbook and then translate that. That gave us a delivery date of probably 2022,” said Elder Anthony D. Perkins, executive director of the Church’s Correlation Department, which oversees the creation of the handbook. “But as those first chapters came out, the First Presidency and [Quorum of the] Twelve felt that the updates were important enough to release as soon as possible.” See a letter from the First Presidency about the new handbook.

Something just changed! Was it your title? Ours did! Make sure your aligned!

Each consultant, no matter what level should always make sure that their title in LDS tools aligns with the titles that have been decided by SLC.  It doesn't matter if your Ward Clerk gave you a really cool, unique title.  What matters is that you are not the last to know...when you should be in the know!

This was just released one hour ago - so look in LDS tools and speak with your Clerk and Bishop to make sure you have the title that not only they intended for you to have, but that it is one that is guaranteed to receive the important messages.  You don't want to miss any - not after I saw the General Conference trailer today - It was so intriguing, it brought tears to my eyes.

Next week starts with Roots Tech - This is the most important time for a Ward, Stake or Area or now, Multi-Stake Consultants to receive the information that will help your people the most.

We will be taking notes and attending classes.  If there is anything you want more information on, shoot us an email and we will try to get to that class and take notes.  We will be posting our notes here so keep watching...

Here are the appropriate titles which must align with SLC for you to get this important information and send it to your Ward patrons.

This just in. Make sure with your Ward and Stake Clerks that your title aligns with one of these do you will continue to get the important messages that are about to come down from SLC

How to use the Ward Family History Template

When this video - which has no sound on purpose - it's just instructional so you can stop it and do what it says and then restart it - gets to the part about converting the file from OCS to Excel - you can pretty much ignore that.  Some of the old software, yes, it has to be converted, but a Teckie Clerk who knows his way around the keyboard will know exactly how to quickly download 3 columns of the ward directory.

For those who may be interested, Here is the link to this video on our youtube site

Here is the link to the excel workbook that you put onto a ward one drive so that the consultants can make calls to ward members, schedule one on one appointments and gather information about how best to help them.

Leaders have the most trouble with this aspect when consultants move out or released.

They aren't sure where to pick up the slack with that family.  Now, everything is documented.  They might need to learn how to merge.  They might need to learn how to properly source a document.  The leader, upon a consultant being released, has only to look at the documentation saved on the one drive to pick up and keep going with lessons for that family.

I hope you enjoy this.  We have seen it truly make a difference in the lives of the leaders and also the Consultants.

Consultants have in their mind,
the idea that a Consultant is a person who knows everything.  Therefore, they can consult with people and give them good advice.   When a new consultant takes this calling, sometimes they are just so overwhelmed with their interpretation of what that calling entails, they have fears and anxiety about calling people to offer their services.

First of all, God would not have directed the Bishop to call you as a Consultant if he didn't think you could do it.  We are all learning something new every day.  Don't think that you have to know everything perfectly.  However, if you want to learn tips that will help you stay on top of this calling and look professional, "like" our blog and our http://www.facebook.com/NaswFamilyHistory page so that you are always in the know.

Seek to find that which you desire and the Lord will meet you more than halfway!

The excel workbook that helps the Leaders to stay on top of their Ward needs is found here.

Please download it to your desktop, then name it your own ward family history template, then the system won't be as likely to save it on our onedrive or overwrite our original.

The Story of You!

Have you ever had an adult child say, "Grandma you've told us that story a hundred times."  I remember my brother, (when he was about 9 and I was about 6) saying it to my Grandmother.  She looked around, avoiding his stare as if something were wrong with her, then with all the courage she could muster, she sat up straight and gave him "what for!"

With a stern eye and a shaking index finger, she wound up for the pitch.  "You listen to me young man, and you listen well.  When you are my age, every story is precious.  Why anything I can remember about my parents is such a distant memory that I have to keep repeating it to keep their faces fresh in my mind.  What will you do when your children ask you to tell them the story of how their Great Grandfather came to this land?"  How will you remember the story of him almost getting pinned between two railroad cars?  How will you be able to tell your children about being grateful for grocery stores?  Running water in the house?  Indoor plumbing?  You know, not an outhouse?  We had to grow our own fruits and vegetables.  We raised livestock for our meat in the winter.  Store?  Maybe the general store where we got yardage to make our own clothes, or flour and sugar if someone was having a birthday."

He looked down and pawed the floor with his shoes.  "Grandma, maybe you should start from the beginning.  I'll learn the stories well enough to help the young ones not forget you."

Tears welled in her eyes as she stroked his head and pulled him close.

Garry blushed a little and said,  "I guess I didn't know you had it so rough.  No stores?  How did you get ice cream of candy?

"Oh, there was candy.  You could get a whole sack for 5 pennies.  Rough?  We didn't know any different.  We loved every minute of our lives."

         *     *     *     *     *      *     *    *      *     *     *     *to be continued...

Read our newsletter this month below for some ideas to get your own story and family tree back on track, and thank you for all of the countless hours you spend helping others.  We appreciate you so much.  We get letters from all over the country from people whose lives were blessed because of a Consultant who went the extra mile and helped them break through a brick wall of incorrect information.  Have you watched our "Consultants are like Detectives!"?

The Story of You

Why is everyone all excited about Roots Tech?  At this time of year, the instruction from the First Presidency is disseminated through Elders over Family History to Family Search and then to us as Area Temple and Family History Consultants.  We take the messages to help our Stake Presidencies carry out the direction or focus for the Stakes worldwide.  Elder Kevin S. Hamilton will be in attendance and the line up of classes and booths is really building to a climax of planning and coordinating to achieve the theme for the year of "The Story of You".

This year, all the booths and sessions will have something to do with helping you to share your story.  You.  This is an inspiring subject because we don't want any consultants to get frustrated or burned out.  We need to replenish your well with ideas, technology and plans to inspire you to help your ward members.  We genealogists spend so much time helping others that sometimes our own tree doesn't get the appropriate attention it needs.  As Consultants, we break through challenging barriers in time to help others, but our own dead ends remain a mystery.  In celebration of all of the time and hours that each consultant dedicates to the Lord through their calling, this year's Roots Tech will help you take a breather and prepare your own story for your posterity.  We have put together some ideas to help you in this newsletter!   Ready, set go!

Youth working with elderly in the ward

This year, the theme for Roots Tech is “The Story of a You”.  Here's a challenge to write about.  What have you done or what has someone done for you to sacrifice time and talents to make your life more special?
In 1969, Ted, wanting to do something really special for me, sent me a  bouquet and a lovely filigree bracelet.  We lived 400 miles from each other.   I never knew until 37 years later when we met again that he was working for .75 an hour doing gardening for a l o t of hours to send these beautiful flowers from San Luis Obispo to Danville with that beautiful gold Filigree-bracelet for (that you can’t see in the picture) my 16th birthday.
What story can you document about your life?  Can you think of something which might encourage someone to find the courage to do something special for another person? Would your 16-year-old do something so incredibly thoughtful?  Ted's parents must have been very proud! I hope you will sit down and jot some treasured memories down. When they are locked away in our hearts and minds, they can’t be used to uplift and edify or teach others about how to create tender mercies in other peoples' lives with the help of the inspired writings you document.  You have that power to do so!

Also, write to us and let us know what knowledge we can ascertain for you from going up to SLC for Roots Tech to help you further your journey.  Where are you stuck in your tree?  Have a dead-end you'd like us to investigate?
Naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com.  Visit our naswfamilyhistory.blogspot.com to learn about an easy and fun way to start a ward family History plan.

S0 now, what is your story?  Here is a little video on how to get started.  This is what we use when we are invited to visit assisted living facilities here in the area.  Some of the activity directors want to keep tenants' minds healthy and active, in an effort to encourage them to use their time left in a productive way to preserve history for their downline generations to come.  SOMEONE WANTS  TO HEAR THEIR STORY!    Below is a wonderful story about a young woman who befriended an elderly person at a bus stop.  She went out of her way to listen to her stories and even showed her how to take a selfie.    We have so many older people in our ward and what a wonderful project to engage the youth, who are so computer savvy and literate help an older person type up their story for their grandchildren.  https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/08/30/young-woman-befriends-lonely-91-year-old-at-bus-stop-and-helps-h/

This presentation was just rolled into a video but if you would like the powerpoint so that you can motivate others, please email us and we will send it to you.

First, a number of classes from RootsTech (including the keynote general sessions with speakers like Leigh Anne Tuohy and Emmitt Smith) will be streamed live on RootsTech.org free of charge. Second, for those with temple and family history callings, a virtual pass giving access to more content can be purchased at a discount using the discount code CallingsVP.
Ward clerks and Executive Secretaries would really shine if they put this next item on their Presidency's calendars.  There will be a Leaders' meeting on Thursday Night - February 27, 2020.  Last year, only 30% of all leaders watched the informative meeting which asked all wards to come up with a ward Plan.   If that has been a struggle for you, and you are not sure where to start, perhaps you would like to look at something that the Presidencies in our stakes that we represent just loved.  It is a Ward Annual Family History Planner.  It gives links to ideas for each faction of your ward leadership for family History on FamilySearch.org    If looking at it causes you to come up with an even more brilliant idea, please share your success with us so that we can help others who are struggling - you can email us at naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com

If you would like to download anything in this file, please do so, but change the name of it slightly on your desktop so as not to change our original.  The system will want to try to save yours to our onedrive.

No one asked or consigned us to make these helps.  We do so for the Stakes that we represent and they are appreciative of the help.  If you can think of something which improves this, please let us know so that we can help others improve their ward Plan.   Though we mostly work with our own stakes, as followers of Jesus Christ and the Spirit of Elijah, we would not turn anyone away who asks for assistance.  Please let us know if you need help.

Recently the Family History Leadership was changed from Elder Bradley Foster to Elder Kevin S. Hamilton.  As we welcome Elder Hamilton, it is bittersweet that Elder Foster leaves us - but with a legacy, through a video he remains an inspired leader in our hearts.  Elder Hamilton was our Stake President in Newbury Park, CA, since then he has been led by the Prophet to many adventures, from a member of the African Area Presidency to other areas of the United States.

NEW HANDBOOK TO REPLACE HANDBOOK2

Almost all of our teaching aids follow the Handbook2 - but this new online version will be exciting to read.  In anticipation of this upcoming conference, make sure you read this online handbook, watch the Leadership Meeting on Thursday Night of Roots Tech, February 27, 2020 and take your vitamins!  You'll be prepared for the upcoming surprises promised by the Prophet at Conference.
