Zoom meeting on helping Missionaries was great!

No matter what the title is, "Helping Missionaries to onboard a new member to the ward",  "Learning how to effectively work with the Missionaries, thus raising their convert retention numbers", it was apparent that whatever we do to help the Missionaries work in the field be saved, retained, and cherished after dedicating two years of their lives to this "marvelous work and a wonder", is it is greatly appreciated by: missionaries, parents of missionaries, Bishops, Mission Presidents, companions of missionaries affected by depression, new members who need a leg up when reaching out to make friends, and people who love people and enjoy being a part of a ward family!

We got some great questions

1.   Can you open/permit the "Chat" feature.  Not everyone has it.

Yes we will learn how to do it.  It’s very difficult to chat back while presenting. The print was so fine it and it was a little far away from us that we couldn’t see what people are saying without squinting.

2.   Just a reminder if you could number the pages for reference.  Also, if you make changes, annotate a V. 1,       V. 2, etc. and/or change the colors and design so that everyone is aware this an update.

I can do that But sometimes the changes in because of stupidity and that’s all  Like a ridiculously misspelled word.

3.  One slide commented that the Bishop gathered information from the Ward and sent it to the Stake President. Not aware that any of this is being nor why.

Bishops have never had a “ward plan” until 2019. So then how do they communicate that to their stake president so that he can communicate to the area president that all of his Wards are complying and are doing well? They need an annual planner so we created one that makes it real easy for them to find out what each faction of the auxiliaries are doing for a Family History each quarter that’s all they need to do

Look for Ward Annual family history planner

We received word from a few Presidents that they would like to know how people are coming along with family history in the Ward.  Without a lot of work, you can implement these tools and have really valuable conversations with your leaders that they can report to their Area Presidency.
Instead of replying, "Great, just great!" when your Stake President says, "How is your Ward doing with Family history?" You could now have at your fingertips, "Our consultants made contact with 30 families last month and gave them ideas for family nights, they helped 5 families prepare fan charts for their home, two of our consultants are working with the Elders and people being taught to build a tree and have names even before they are baptized.  We are doing great!"

What a difference you could make!

In the matching video call how do use the ward and your family history on our YouTube.com

4.   I am an avid researcher.  Being a convert helps.  The FamilySearch FamilyTree (FSFT) program is growing and becoming very complex.  Unless the user is a very computer-literate (I like to think I am), it is simply too much for anyone over the age of 40 to learn (and that doesn't include the time to learn - just the complexity).  I have simply sat and worked with older members, using the Helper function, and researched and printed out the names for them.  They have time to attend.  I wonder when and if the ability to use the program is going to become universal.  Clearly the complexity to deal with billions of individuals is important for the future; however......
ANSWER:
The consultant planner ceased to be the plan for Consultants to use to analyze peoples trees when somebody realized that ANY member could use the Consultant planner to find opportunities for success for temple ordinances. (I’ll bet they read one of my troubleshooting videos).  Non-members cannot use the consultant planner/helper resource because it shows ordinances and they are not allowed to see those until they become a member. Yes, family search is incredibly complex for for very new members and very young learners. That’s why we suggest they put the first four generations into Ancestry and link them to family search it’s just use more user-friendly and easier to navigate.

5.   I am wondering about Elder Ballard's Instructions on getting the Stake Training/meetings accomplished.  Until this letter came out, many of wondering just what the Stake duties were.

ANSWER:
We have org charts for every auxiliary showing the duties for each person based on the handbook but since it’s a chart it’s easier to understand for some people it’s located in the temple and family history leader folder on our OneDrive that I gave you. Did I give it to you?

I am excited to see the Stake RS Presidency involved.  The sisters get the job done (I have seven daughters).

ANSWER:  Yes relief Society is one of the auxiliaries where the relief Society president, JUST LIKE THE WARD,  has one counselor over missionary work and has another counselor over Temple and Family History are org chart very carefully tells each one is. No, we didn’t say it’s that has to be the first counselor over a Family History and has to be the second counselor over to the family history the handbook just says a counselor so the RS Pres can use her best judgment for that

6.  I am wondering what has happened to this page.  In the past, all the icons shown were posted by each member.  Then, last Fall, the green Temple icons were taken away.  Then they were put back.  Now, it doesn't even seem to be updating.   Link:  https://www.familysearch.org/campaign/patrons
ANSWER:
This was a very interesting episode in family history. It did list the green temples  for everyone, however, it’s possible that this could’ve been a scenario that some very eager temple and family history consultant ran up to someone and said ,”Hey how are you?  You have 12 temple opportunities why aren’t to going to the temple?"  That probably didn't happen like that.  But with the entire ward's info at your fingertips, we wondered if there was a privacy issue there..

The temples were really cute and a great little set of icons to give the bishop an idea as to who’s doing their work and who is it but as he is not allowed to keep quotas or numbers on those type of things and since that is kind of a breach of privacy on the part of someone who’s not the bishop telling another person how many temple ordinances they have I’ll bet they put the Kabash on it

7.  In our Stake (four Wards, three branches), there is ONE Ward Family History Plan complete. I am hoping the "new" links to Stake supervision will help.  And it's not like the FHC Director and the other Assistant and I aren't pushing the issue.
THAT'S OK - MAYBE FAMILIES ARE WORKING MORE IN THEIR HOMES.  WE WANT ACTIVITY OF ANY KIND.  IT IS GOOD FOR YOUR MENTAL OUTLOOK TO KEEP BUSY AND FAMILY HISTORY IS A FUN WAY TO DO IT.

8.   The links on on the PC in your Library.  That would be great to have.
Links to Family History for NASWfamilyhistory.  Please download to your desktop and save it as another name.  If you use our products, you should keep our name on them as we use information from Family Search, the Handbook 2020, and Roots Tech - all years.  You are not required to use any of our materials.  If they help you understand your calling better or help your ability to lead your people, that is all that is important.  Ted and Karen Meyer

One Work - Family History and Missionary Work

We met with the Zone missionaries last month virtually in an effort to teach them how to work with the Temple and Family History Leaders and Consultants. We met in the Mission President's office, he introduced us and our Elder was also online to watch our presentation.

This weekend we did part two and that was to show the Leaders how they can use the Missionaries, Consultants in working together with people being taught before baptism to get names, build a tree with the goal of a fan chart. During the teachings, the consultant is there with the FTM and becomes the new person's friend so that they can work on the goal of names, tree, baptism, then within 60 days go to the temple with their own names.

We have been training this way for 3 years as in all of our meetings it was verbal but not in writing anywhere. We had a chance meeting with Elder Bednar who answered our prayer, as he had vocally and very succinctly reiterated, "...go to the temple within 60 days with their own names!" On the stage after the presentation, we thanked him for that, and Elder Hamilton, my former stake president, asked us to send our One Work to him.

We hope you enjoy this and if it is something you also believe strongly in, you may use our examples. We are giving this Saturday night on a Zoom as many have requested a repeat meeting. It gives suggestions and ideas that we have seen work. Have a great weekend.

Br. and Sr. Meyer,

Please email us if you are unable to get on the zoom this weekend.  All of our Stakes are in Arizona so since it is primarily for them, we are using Arizona time.

Here is our presentation.  If you watch this ahead of our presentation, you may have questions at the end.  We welcome our Stakes!

You can't click on this to get there you must copy and paste it into your browser.  For some reason, blogger blocks it thinking you are looking for a page on blogger.

What is your Story? Do you have a family story started? Why not colorize the pictures and put some life into it!

Should I colorize old pictures?

When Mr. Turner from Turner Broadcasting, started colorizing old black and whites it caused quite a controversy.  Some people thought it was denigrating an era where the black and white pictures said something about our history.  There was an innocence of the day and those black and white movies took you back to a time when people respected their elders, honored their parents, and country.  Add color and it's just another move towards the riotous 60s, hippies, drugs, sex and rock and roll - the nightmares of all parents.  Their children were out of control.  Yet, sitting in front of a two-hour movie in black and white, and they were instantly transported back to a gentler time when families sat around the radio and listened to stories and plays together.

I feel a little differently about colorization and was very excited when My Heritage, one of Family Search's partners developed a way for people to colorize old pictures for free.  For me, it was a time when the stories that I was told while looking at black and white pictures were a source of wonder.  I had to imagine the color because my whole life was colorized!  When they told me that Aunt Isabel had dark red hair like my Mother and Father, I looked at my mother's henna rinse (to keep the gray away) and tried to imagine my Aunt, now with gray hair, born in 1914 with beautiful red hair.  Now, I know!

Here is the same story I put into my journal, and will insert it into my memories now that I colorized the pictures then after the story, I'll show you the black and whites at the bottom.

The place to colorize your pictures is on:

https://www.myheritage.com/incolor

Aunt Isabel Concannon was beautiful.  So beautiful in fact, she won a beauty contest in 1930 at 15 years old.   She was also a champion swimmer as she took 2nd place in an all-city
meet. Isabella Mae Concannon was born on 28th of July 1914 to William and Mabel Concannon.  She was the 3rd child of 13 born to William and Mabel.
here she is 2nd from the left

Mabel Harris Concannon in 1911
Wm Matthew Concannon in 1911
Our grandfather, William Matthew Concannon, son of Michael Joseph Concannon and Mary Agnes Lally from the isle of Inishboffin, Galway,

Ireland, was born in Los Angeles.  He was the first of the Concannon children born in the United States.  He was not only a champion swimmer, but an exhibition diver at the pool where Isabel and her siblings grew up.  She had taught herself to play the piano by ear. That was her talent and it got her the trophy from the Pageant.  Of course, you know how blarney goes.  We were told the contest was Miss Arizona which is a pretty cool feat.  But, I'm a pretty good genealogist and was unable to corroborate that fact. So we will leave it as a "pageant". She lived in Tucson. Later in life  , married to my Uncle Don Root, she was in a bar, a good catholic girl that she was, playing the piano, and two men got into a fight over her. She stood up to break them apart and got hit on the head. This happened the year that I was born in 1953. The accident resulted in a hematoma on the brain and ensuing brain surgery to remove it. The stroke was a major one but crippled her rather than take her life.  It was in the speech part of her brain and brain surgery was not too advanced or delicate.

Something went wrong and something was touched or bruised during the removal resulting in the condition of seriously impaired speech. I loved her. She would always bring me things that she embroidered and always wanted to wear or sit on anything purple.

When my mother let me redecorate my bedroom, She said, "No you don't really want purple, right?" I chose big purple roses for my white 4 poster bed. Purple walls and purple roses for the drapes. I knew she would love it and she did!
She would stroke the flowers and say over and over,
"Mother, mother, mother." She knew my mother didn't want purple. But it gave me incredible joy that it made her so happy. It soon became my favorite color. All my life, when she would visit or I would visit her home, we were inseparable. She could only say Mother, Mike (my dad), Don, her husband's name, and “you”.  Sometimes she would point to me and say it over and over again with a smile.  She could still remember how to play Easter Parade over and over again on our piano. I would play a song I had learned and she would play one...Easter Parade.

Isabel  worked at a drugstore in Tucson.  She married someone right out of high school.  His name was Frank Charles Fitch.  She had two children.  A boy and a girl.  In 1951, the records show that She was married to my Uncle Don when Frank died of a Heart attack in San  Francisco.

There is no mention of the children and my family, my mother, 95 years in 2020, states that she never knew that Isabel had children.  She had met and married my father in 1946.  Isabel was living with my parents for a while and had a problem with drinking.  Now putting the puzzle together, she said, “Maybe something happened which caused her to drink.  Tragically, alcoholism and a weak heart ended her life when I was a young mother. She got to meet my first two children, Virginia and Brian. I didn't care.

My daughter wrote a song about her. She also taught herself at four years old to play by ear.   My daughter’s favorite color is also purple.  As her fingers tickle the ivory, I feel Aunt Isabel lives on in her.

Who will you write about today?

This photo is of the younger children as the older ones were already grown.  The baby in the picture where Isabel was about 5 and James was a baby. Now this shows baby Jimmy as the oldest of the younger children.  From left to right - Mike (My father), Johnny, Ginny, Jimmy about 10 and baby Joe.

Left to right - Mike (my dad) High school - possibly college Football star, Jimmy, baby Joe in front and Johnny on the right

later...my dad's story.

The 2020 Roots Tech Leadership Meeting

The Leadership Meeting Takeaways...

As we sat there listening with rapt fascination on our faces, I stole a sidelong glance at my husband.  He was just as enthralled as I was.  Here was Elder Bednar practically giving our "Where do you Fit in the Ward Family History Puzzle" slide deck.  For the past three years, we have been working every angle from RootsTech PLMs right into our messages to our Stake Presidencies.  We looked at each other and shook our heads in the affirmation.  "Is that what I think I just heard?"  Ted smiled and said, "It sure was."   In our meetings for the past three years, they FS Leaders and the Brethren would mention that the Prophet wanted all new members to get to the Temple within 60 days with their own names.  We found ways to ensure that and it all starts with the Consultant going out with the FT Missionaries.

We kept getting questions like, "Where is it written that we have to get them there within 60 days?"  Now, and this is really great, you can watch the Leadership Meeting for 2020 and yes, it is in there, with conviction and with fervor.

We have included a few slides here for activities for the Young Men and Young Women to include a new YMYW member and become friend shipped by the whole organization.  After to PLEASE add audio to my presentations, I finally got it done tonight.  It's not perfect, but I think you will be as motivated to achieve the goal of helping a new member as much as we are.

Thank you Sr. Anderson who helped develop the companion guide to Come Follow Me for TheFHGuide.com   She is super talented and I borrowed her intro of the Priesthood Leadership Session on this video because I loved how she wrote it.  A Special thank you for the two examples at the end of the deck, Ms. Annie Wheeler and Brother and Sister Sanchez, who met, fell in love while he was being taught, then a year after his baptism, they were sealed in the Temple.

We have added the video here.  If you would like the slide deck, please email us at naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com

Has this happened to you?  Did Aliens abduct your Family Tree...or part of it?

You log in expecting your last changes...and you see that Grandpa Everet is gone along with his parents, grandparents and the whole faction up line.  All your work gone in a click.  Frustrating, right?

Here is a video - yes - I actually did the voice over this time.  I hope it helps you.  It's a sad thing when you have to start over.  I did in 2015 because trusted too much and didn't understand what a Wiki tree was.  Well, now I do.  It is a collaborative effort and people can change things.  I don't think anyone does this mischievously, or to be evil.  They just think their data is better.  Maybe they are young, or new to research.  Maybe we need to forgive them and learn how to back up our data better!

An ounce of Prevention is worth a pound of Cure...  Ben Franklin coined that phrase in 1736 and it couldn't be truer today!

New from RootsTech 2020

Rubies from RootsTech

Love to share these jewels with you.  The more knowledge you have the easier Family History research and documentation will be for you.

Memories for Ruby

This year, I lost a special friend.  I had only known her for 12 years.  She had been on this earth for 98 years.  Before her wonderful, caring husband Ken passed on,  they would come over to our home, sit on the couch and we would put their tree up on the big screen and hunt for names.  It was a lot of fun.  Her favorite color was red.  I got her a red had with rhinestones and she wore it everywhere, even in bed.  I remember when someone asked me to create a birthday card for her  95th birthday.  I can't tell you what a joy it was to do that.  Now you know, someone who has lived from before radio to the most iPhones will have lots of memories to share with her four daughters, 16 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren.   That means her name is in the Family Search System 55 times.

She asked me every time I visited her why she had to wait to be dead to upload
her stories.  "...and what I have in there, my grandchildren cannot see!"  I agreed with her.  I prayed that they would fix it before she passed away but that just didn't happen.  So now, with great care, all 55 names must be merged into one.   they must be very careful not to merge the wrong way as to preserve the ordinances.

This is a common problem that I heard recently from Ron Tanner will be fixed. It's in the pipeline, Ruby!   Soon, you will be able to not only see your living relatives  but you will be able to create Family Projects together and let the whole family enjoy them.  You will be able to upload your stories, your pictures and your grandchildren will not have to wait until you pass away to appreciate your legacy.

Now people will really be able to collaborate not only on their dead but on their living .   Now, this video is from 2016 but Ron said that it is getting closer and we will let  you know when that is going to happen - just know Family
